Re: Tuba Intonation - Rant
We shouldn't be omitting climate change. That's the cause of/reason for everything, these days. Pointing out snake oil salesmen when they appear is important, but we should be careful not to fall into hand-waving at everything simply because we don't understand all the mechanics of something ...

Re: Tuba Intonation - Rant
I'm going to echo what others have said about other brass instruments: intermediate and professional trumpets always have a first and a third valve slide, horns have 2+ alternate fingering for most of the standard range, trombone players constantly preach some variation of "there aren't 7 positions ...

Re: trombone rant
I saw someone else on the forum say that they try to bring "the smallest equipment that will get the job done" to a gig. It's a sentiment I wish more people agreed with. I do think a full section of .547 trombones is the right choice for a lot of orchestral pieces--and a completely unnecessary setup ...

Sometimes it's the horn's fault
Like anyone with a good teacher, I was told many times in my youth not to let the horn be my excuse for not playing well. "The instrument doesn't make the music, you do." Obviously the caveat to this is that your horn has to be in working order, but I internalized that I am ultimately responsible ...

Re: Trombone doubler question: flat 5th partials?
I'm actually in the opposite position as you, being primarily a trombone player who is filling in tuba for my local community band. Yes, sharp 6th partials and flat 5th partials are pretty much universal in trombones, but the degree to which they are sharp and flat varies based on the horn. If you ...

Re: If you own use BOTH a bass tuba and a contrabass tuba, does this trick work for you?
I can also recommend this technique, since I pretty frequently switch between bass trombone and CC tuba. I would hazard a guess doing this plays on the same psychological trick as taking an essay/email/story you've been writing and changing the font for the whole thing, then re-reading it to catch ...

Re: FS: St. Petersburg 202
That's awful. Best of luck getting it back. Original Reply: What kind of project do you have in mind? I have an old JW Jenkins 3v Eb tuba that I'd trade for a contrabass. It sounds good and everything moves how it should, but it's not the prettiest to look at. I'm too new to the forum to PM, so if ...
