Re: Miraphone 191 5th valve?
I personally use the long whole step 5th for D, Db, and Gb quite frequently on C tuba, as it sits nicer than 4 or 24 on my horn. It also makes some fast runs much easier as my thumb is stronger than my pinky. It's also a great alternate for some notes in the staff and weird trills when you're ...

Re: Free Programs and Applications
The IMSLP app (yes, that IMSLP) is a great free score reader with metronome and markup tools.
For some, the direct link to the IMSLP library is a big plus, but I expect most tubists will just be improving PDFs. Either way, very well-made app and works with most page turning buttons.

Re: Quality of Gard bags?
I have a Gard wheelie that I've used for 6 years with no issues (other than losing one of the screw on feet because of carelessness), and a normal gig bag for the last 2. Both are amazing, feel very solid and I trust my horns in them. The wheelie is heavy, and I wouldn't put a lot of music or ...

Trombotine + Blue Juice
Lasts weeks, no gunk, and when they do start to go they get slow rather than sticky. I much prefer a valve being slightly slow than suddenly going from fast to stuck.

Re: Eastman EBC834…keep an eye out…
Can you share any details about the "style" of instrument the 834 is shaping up to be?
IE, is it going to be similar to a PT-6p / Thor where it's a 5/4 tuba with a heavy, dense sound, or similar to the 632/832 where it's a 4/4 with a broader, fluffy sound, or something else?

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico
Now I have to purchase a new computer, permanently isolate it from the Internet, and freeze the OS and Finale pretty much forever.
Take a look at Parallels for mac. You can snapshot an macOS or windows install with an intact finale installation, save it as a file, then run it as a virtual ...

Eastman EBC834
Does anybody know anything about this horn? I've heard it exists but can't find anything online about it, besides an entry on Glen Cronkhite's shop.

Re: "Contrabass Bugle" vs "Marching Tuba"
I definitely agree that the key of instrument is very important, but is it worthy of describing one as a bugle and one as a mere "marching tuba"? We call both BBb and CC tubas "contrabass tubas" despite a noticable difference in their playing characteristics

"Contrabass Bugle" vs "Marching Tuba"
Hello,
I was wondering if there is a real, measurable difference that qualifies the distinction between GG and BBb horns being called different things.
Besides the key and all the other factors that are associated (length, weight, bell size, etc), is there any real difference? (I know that many ...

Re: 5V CC Tuba
I know a grad student who swears by the big Eastman 836, uses it for orchestral and wind ensemble stuff while he's working on his master's in performance. If you're considering chinese, Eastman should not be overlooked. Just be sure to demo the horn before you commit to it

Re: Bell covers
Back in high school, my sousa section used Spandex for bell covers with elastic waistband string for the rim.
