Re: breathing
The gentleman I take lessons from is displeased with my breathing, or lack there-of. He suggested the Snedecor Low Etudes, as well, and I started working on Etude I a couple weeks ago. I'd never played them before and I've rarely had cause to play much of anything that low. I made myself so dizzy ...

Re: Sellmansberger Orchestra Grand Ultimate is here
Side note: Not a Beatles fan. I'm not, either. Rather, I like their songs, but don't like their recordings. Cover versions from their contemporaries were almost universally better. Now, this next bit draws some heat from time to time. And as a bassist, I don't think I'm technically even allowed to ...

Intolerable!
Actually, that's just fantastic. Seeing a young person really try to get good at something, and then get good at something else that helps demonstrate the first thing, is absolutely wonderful.

Re: step-up
I just saw a news blurb recently that said that Gen something-or-other was going after the trades instead of the college education. There may be hope yet. I currently work at a votech for regional high school students. 10 years ago, this place had empty seats in every classroom. Now, every program ...

Re: Practice Mute Soundcheck
I realize that your unmuted reference at the beginning probably sounds so much like the muted examples due to compression applied by YouTube... You're absolutely right. My understanding is that YouTube does two types of audio compression. The first is a static volume compression. It basically ...

Re: Free Programs and Applications
I use Android devices, and have a strong preference for applications released under an open source license. My personal experience is that these apps tend to do one thing, or just a few things, very well, without the bloat and ads and required network permissions and spyware of the commercial apps ...

Re: iPad revisited
I have a Chromebook with a 14" screen. The keyboard flips all the way around to turn it into a sorta kinda tablet. Most currently supported Chromebooks will also run Android programs. I'm currently using an application called Mobile Sheets for my daily practice routine and for the community band ...

Re: only for those who haven't yet figured this out...
I still play it every year. We used to get 6 105 Howitzers from the Army for my muni band - they were placed in line right next to our summer outdoor venue and facing the crowd some just 30-40 feet away! :facepalm2: Every time they went off the building shook violently and you could feel it in your ...

Re: JP179B review
If either of you have an opportunity to A-B a 179 and 279, I'd love to hear about your impressions. Even as I have already sold a 279, I still haven't played one. Funny-ish story. I had a lesson tonight with a guy named Grant Moore. I took lessons from him a few years back and he had a 184. When I ...

Re: Jim Self's Old #1
I do think mine is a pretty good horn. I haven't used it with the community band, yet, but I think it'll probably see some use this summer. I'm assuming we'll play a bunch of Sousa...York-aholic wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 11:26 pm I've had one of those fixed recording bell 3v Kings and mine played very well also. (There, back on topic.)

I just used some Al Cass oil to silence a noisy door hinge. Does that count?

Jim Self's Old #1
russiantuba 's post here https://tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php?p=104425 sent me down a Jim Self rabbit hole, wherein I discovered a brief description of Old #1. It's a 1240 (not 1241), described as being c.1950, but it's older than that. https://www.bassethoundmusic.com/hardware.html That page is in ...

Re: JP179B review
I searched for the JP279B and found the ad easily enough. Then I took a careful look at the pictures and then looked again. I'll admit to being plenty oblivious at times, but I only see one water key. Am I missing the obvious? A horn of that design seems like it would be gurgling constantly and ...

Re: JP179B review
Oddly, they now offer (while still offering this model) a very similar model...which is (rather than "very similar to a YBB-621") "just like a YBB-621". It's nomenclature is 279B. I've not sold one yet. me...?? I'm in love with their model 379B (squatty/rotary/compact/large bore/big sound). I've ...

Re: JP179B review
Just curious, what was the goal in purchasing this tuba? A specific group, or different size, etc. After a 27 year break in playing, I got the 1240, which is a 3 valve horn. Even with the elapsed time, muscle memory was kicking in and I kept trying to operate a non-existent 4th valve. Also, my neck ...

JP179B review
Before purchasing the JP179B, I spent a great deal of time looking for reviews, videos and photos on the Intartubez, finding very little of substance, aside from a few discussions here at Tubaforum involving those of you who have played, bought, or sold them. I thought I’d make an attempt at writing ...
