FS: 1976 Mirafone 185 5v CC tuba $4,500

Post by arpthark »

I am posting this on behalf of a gentleman located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is a 1976 Mirafone 185 5v CC that he is selling for $4,500 plus shipping. He bought it in the late 70s during his Mm and toured with the American Wind Symphony, kept playing it until he stopped playing in the 90s but has kept up with maintenance on it. The bell is 15" and the 5th valve is tuned to the two-step length. Please PM me and I will put you in contact with him for more info.

Are you sure it's a 185, the bell stack proportion looks like a 184 to me. Here's a photo of a 185 I'm familiar with.

Yep. A 184 of that vintage would have a ~14" bell. The seller measured and it's 15". He had assumed for years that it was a 186 and described it as a decent-sized tuba. Might just be the angle.

What is that thing that looks like a paddle that is below what looks like the 4th valve? Maybe it's the picture but if that is the 5th valve as it appears to be, I can't figure out how you would play that, physically.

I don't see what you're describing. Maybe part of the carriage bar that the linkage attaches to? Looks normal to me.

Edit: I think you're describing the picture that is the valves upside down, so that's just the fifth valve paddle. Otherwise that'd be a left handed tuba!
