$5,500 York 3082 (3+1) EEb Tuba (Rebadged Besson 982) Silver. Winter Case

Post by tubaing »

York Preference 3082 EEb 4 valve compensating tuba silver. Barely used. I believe this tuba to be completely dent free (never been dented). You might??? Be able to find some light scratches. It's in very good condition.

I believe this model was made in the same German factory that makes the Besson 982's and that this is (with few discrepancies) a rebadged Besson 982.

Includes the Jacob Winter Case (some mild staining inside case from valve oil/slide grease and some scuffs on the outside).

No mouthpiece- I assume you have one you like... I don't really have one to include unless you want to pay extra for a Helleburg or GW Baer or whatever else I have around... but I assume you have something decent

Alteri gigbag can be included for $200 extra.

I bought this thinking about switching from my Besson 983... they are both excellent. I thought the 983 gave me a little more brightness (smaller bell, I guess) and fit me better... plus I guess I really do like the 4 in line thing (even though I prefer 3+1 on my euphonium).

Someone I emailed with asked about how this compares to my Besson 983 and about its intonation. I don’t play this regularly since I have decided to keep the Besson 983 and want to keep this York pristine. I have some videos I can share (most easily on Facebook messenger) where I play some excerpts side by side on the two Ebs.

983 has a 17 inch bell. York has a 19 inch bell.
983 is a bit zippier (my word- not super helpful... maybe more responsive and brighter sound especially in the staff)
York has a darker sound... my other tuba is a Holton BB-345... I used to have that Kanstul 90S tiny F tuba and loved it besides it kinda sounded too much like a euphonium. The 983 definitely sounds like a tuba and maybe the York is a shade closer to the timbre of a contrabass tuba than suits my tastes.
Pitch on the York is excellent with main slide out about 3/4 inch. 1st line G 4th space G sometimes rode sharp 10-15 cents... sometimes not. Response is quite good all over. Very low range (around low F) plays good, but I think the 983 barks it out a bit better... quicker/easier response? So in that range, a little more deliberate practice for quicker passages. Still a million times easier than the low range of something like a MW45.
