Are you sure it's a 185, the bell stack proportion looks like a 184 to me. Here's a photo of a 185 I'm familiar with.

Yep. A 184 of that vintage would have a ~14" bell. The seller measured and it's 15". He had assumed for years that it was a 186 and described it as a decent-sized tuba. Might just be the angle.

What is that thing that looks like a paddle that is below what looks like the 4th valve? Maybe it's the picture but if that is the 5th valve as it appears to be, I can't figure out how you would play that, physically.

I don't see what you're describing. Maybe part of the carriage bar that the linkage attaches to? Looks normal to me.
Edit: I think you're describing the picture that is the valves upside down, so that's just the fifth valve paddle. Otherwise that'd be a left handed tuba!
