SOLD: functional BBb sousaphone $450

Post by arpthark »

For sale is an Elkhorn (a division of Getzen) BBb sousaphone that was likely made by Amborg in Italy sometime in the mid-20th century. I have swapped out a new Conn lower mouthpipe, so this will accept normal Conn necks (not included), and I have also replaced the water key and done some dent work on the main tuning slide, which was completely caved in on one side. As seen, it is very cosmetically challenged but all slides and valves move and it is fully functional. It is a bit smaller than a Conn 14K and accordingly punchy. Would be great for banda or street bands or something like that.

Asking just $450 plus shipping or pickup from Connecticut. Can also meet you around southern New England for pickup.

Somebody will be able to clean that up very nicely. Strip the lacquer off, run some dent balls through it, and you’ll have a great instrument that you didn’t need to pay a whole lot for!

Yes. My goal with this was to make a sousaphone that came to me in very bad shape with busted braces, a torn-off lower mouthpipe, a mangled main tuning slide, frozen valves and slides a playable instrument.

If my klezmer gig gets snowed out tomorrow, I might do some more dent work on it. I can probably at least get that big one on the back of the bell out a bit. The lacquer will be the next owner’s prerogative, though! It will probably flake off in hot water. So much as sniff it with a torch and it started to turn black.

Here’s me goofing around with it:
