Got my new Cronkhite bag today!

Post by DonO. »

…and I couldn’t be happier!

I guess I don’t need to tell most of you about what a nice case this is!

First of all, it was a 14 week wait, give or take.

Secondly, this was purchased so that I could easily carry my “small horn” (Kanstul 3/4 size 3 valve) to practices. I often take it for practice and reserve my King for performances. Also planning to use the Kanstul as my “Jazz horn” when I go to my college alumni jazz band this year. BUT…am I crazy for buying a $600 case for a horn I only paid $1000 for? Maybe. But I don’t care. Nothing I looked at off the shelf would fit this tuba right. So the expense all came down to utility/practicality.

I went with the dark blue Cordura with black leather trim. What great quality! The craftsmanship is superb! And the fit just couldn’t be better. The detachable folio pocket, included accessory pouch, and free leather mouthpiece pouch are nice touches. Backpack straps are super heavy duty but very comfortable. This is going to be SO much better than lugging around that old wooden case! :smilie7:

Are they as good as when they were made in California? I can’t say, I don’t have any experience with those. All I can say is my new case exceeded my expectations. I would recommend these cases without hesitation. Yes, they are spendy. But I feel they’re worth every penny.

I don't know what model of tuba you bought of that make, but a friend of mine - who's about 18 or 19 years older than me - taught me this many years ago:

What you pay for something has nothing to do with what it's worth.

If the tuba for which you paid $1,000 warrants a $600 bag, so be it.

If the bag you bought doesn't put you in the poor house, doesn't make any spousal unit lastingly angry, doesn't meant missing out on something important (food, mortgage, paying your bookie), and makes you happy, well, why not?

You only live once (well yes, there are those times when someone dies and the medics, nurses, or docs bring them back, but you know what I mean).

Did I tell you about the time my wife did hands on, direct (as in inter-chest cavity) heart compressions on a patient? No? Guess I just did. You're welcome.

Are the dyes they use sulfur free? Cause sulfur tarnishes silver.

That is a very good question! I don’t know. But I have been considering switching to a stainless steel mouthpiece!

What about the foam rubber that's just underneath the gray material on the interior? It seems to me that substance and silver don't particularly get along...

... but as I posted before, if I end up with a silver instrument, it's probably because I built it and it was already mostly silver (so I plated it over the entire instrument, rather than having a whole bunch of an instrument stripped) or because it was used and a remarkable instrument at a remarkable price that happened to be silver. I'm not a fan of silver plating at all, as it's a nuisance...Brass - and/or silver over brass - both tarnish, both leave residue on skin, and both are odorous when oxidation occurs...

...I suspect you were attracted to a nice instrument had a great price, and the finish that it happened to have on it was a secondary concern.

There is a tarnish preventative bag on the market for instruments. I might understand that it tends to consume oxygen somehow...?? This bag would be a thin bag that you would slip over your instrument before putting it in a hard case or a padded bag.

I've moved completely over to hard cases, but I'm not turning loose of any of my Cronkhite-made California bags... (I made a rack way down at one end of the master bathroom to hang them all up high overhead.) It might end up whereby I can still play, but I might not be able to haul around the extra 25 to 35 lb that hard cases typically weigh.
