She's pretty good, and - last year - moved on from an un-smushed/rebuilt-valves Holton to a really nice Chinese-made horn (not E...one of the really good ones...probably Verus).

That's truly impressive, bloke. Most of the ensembles I've played with could desperately use a horn player capable of such mighty volume and excellent tone.
Here's hoping she remains an active horn player for a lifetime.

My son is a better than good trombone player. Since he started playing, I’ve consistently repeated that I just hope he enjoys playing and continues to do so into adulthood as possible, but it’s not my wish for him in any way to be a full time professional player. I think it has worked pretty well.

Very good sound. You should be proud, she made the correct instrument choice.

It would have been pretty difficult for her to choose otherwise even if she wanted to. Both of her grandparents play horn professionally and one of them teaches a zillion students every week, including this granddaughter (over zoom). All three of her grandparent's children played horn, her father (one of the three) plays horn in the Pittsburgh Symphony, and so on... But she's also playing trumpet in the school jazz band and some trombone and baritone. She used to play some violin back when she was too little to play horn.
Her siblings are both really good kids and what I would refer to as "regular smart", but this particular one is one of those really rare ones that can succeed and probably excel at just about anything. She also showed promise as a gymnast when she was small, but that was just too expensive. She reads hundreds of books, and is taking 11th and 12th grade classes though she's in the 9th. Thankfully, she's not one of those like this that's socially weird, and as well adjusted and has friends, etc., though as you might expect she only has a few friends. The other concern is that she's quite pretty, and that's going to be a problem pretty quick.
... Oh yeah, she and her siblings are all in the Boy Scouts. (These days, there are all-girl troops in Boy Scouts.). I wouldn't be in the least surprised if she achieves the Eagle within a year... I think she's only been involved in scouting for a couple of years, and she already has achieved the rank of Life, and several badges towards Eagle.. and yes, she's a superb bugler and has all the calls memorized.
