Once you’re there, just type “garage” into the search window.

I don't know. Someone did write "Conn" next to the leadpipe.

Compare/contrast with the 726 in Minnesota?

Yes, was thrown off by the Conn sharpie print, but it looks almost identical to pedaljay's 726 for sale in MN.

I trolled through DaBay tuba section today and, besides Quinn's Garage Sale, there seemed to be a lot of other horns which might be suitable for the home handyman. Horns that weren't high value horns which needed more repair to make it economically feasible to have it professionally repaired but might be worth it for someone who had a hankerin' to push out dents and solder up tubes and braces at home.

Bump.

Once again, i'm too lazy to post links. If memory serves, a variety of Eb projects: several Conns, a York 4 valver, a Higham, and a L & H? Too lazy to double check. Oh, and if your double reed chops need exercise, a Reed Contrabass! (how could i not mention that?)

All wanting love that a lazy person like me can't necessarily commit to, as well as a shipping cost (at least here on the east coast) that means one really wants it. Or something.

Seems most of it ends today, i think?

Also a bass sax is in the mix, what i guess i didn't mention the first pass.

Who doesn't want a bass sax?

someone who could have afforded one when they were available for $5k but cannot afford one now that they are $30k.

Same thing with the paperclip contra clarinets -- I had two almosts with this seller and both went south on his end.

Mmmm... paperclip instruments!? Sounds almost as intriguing as learning to play the saw...

But apparently someone got that bass sax for... 2,375 plus shipping and taxes... and repairs etc. oh, and reading the description, replacing the neck and mouthpiece.

I played a school instrument a little, LeBlanc "paper clip" BBb with an extra big mouthpiece. Other models (Selmer) could use a smaller reed, and that was all Rico made, so when I got it, it had a hand-whittled reed courtesy of the clarinet instructor. Complete with lipstick stains. Van Doren made a really big reed, though, and once I had special ordered that, and after a little fixing up, it played OK. It went down to C, a half step below standard clarinet, and from a specific place in the house I was living in at the time, that note would form a stable resonance that was pretty awesome. Otherwise, not a very useful instrument in a mix with typical band instruments.

That's what you get with a bass saxophone. I think it's kind of a sweet spot at the low end of the woodwinds, where there's enough sound that it's an instrument to reckon with, it isn't so low that the pitches start sounding weird, it can play with a considerable expressive range, etc. The reed contrabass - I'll admit I've kept an eye out for one at times, and likewise the contrabass sarrusophone, but I can't say I ever heard one sound good.

If truly interested in the contrabass range double reeds, enough to grapple with the fingerings, and endowed with sufficient surplus funds (i.e. astronomical), I'd recommend the contraforte from Eppelsheim et al.

One band I was in, there was a small lady who played the tuba parts on a bass sax. She was quite good --- nice tone and in tune, and she read bass clef too. Had a Buescher; they moved to California though.

That same band for a while had a contra-alto clarinet, but it wasn't a paperclip. I got a paperclip from Mr Q via the bay, but it had been advertised as in perfect playing condition but was far from it. I was told by a clarinetist that it wasn't worth the bother of fixing up, but I think maybe that person was not realizing that any of those would need fixing up, and that it would have been worth it, but anyhow it went back. The second time, I again bought one from Mr Q, but I assumed it would need work. When I asked to have it sent to Midsouth Music instead of to me, Mr Q went silent and I never got the instrument. I have to assume he knew it would be evaluated as not being in the advertised shape. So I have never considered anything from that vendor again, and all those are financially out of reach now anyway.
