A band director I know just sent a note asking about currently available tuba mouthpieces comprable to an Olds 14. Apparently they have had students using this very old (no pun intended) mouthpiece for quite a while and would like to replace it with something similar. If this person were local to me ...

I am fond of the idea of having at least one bass tuba in a wind band section. It creates a sort of bridge between the sounds of the big tubas and the euphoniums, especially on divisi tuba parts. I've used the 983 in a community band situation. It worked just fine.
