Re: Lee Stofer Lidl horns

I have not played any of them. But if I was in the market for a NEW Bb tuba, the Lindl tubas would be my first stop.

Re: Magnets for dent balls

Really? When I was looking before, it was $86 for the two pack. Or you just found a better deal.

Re: Magnets for dent balls

My employer has been extremely kind and is allowing me to use whatever tools and equipment they have. Prior to that, I was intending to purchase a couple sizes from mc master carr. Prices on gauge balls from them are way more reasonable than ball bearings on Amazon. Here is one that I was looking at...

Re: Magnets for dent balls

So the magnet and 1.5 inch gauge ball are working fairly well. However I have a few dents that are being stubborn. I was thinking it would be nice if i could hammer them. Maybe I could try using the ball as a hammer. So i set the magnet on the dent, the ball is drawn to it hard. I lift off and repea...

Re: poll for low fingerings on five-valve non-compensating instruments

I normally use 1245. But it really depends on how the intonation of it sits with the group I'm playing with. Also, if I'm playing with a youngster who is just finding pedal notes; I will stay up and properly support the group because the youngsters always try to play everything down there (usually p...

Re: Name a BBb that:

Didn't play one, but maybe the Josef Lidl Moldau? I agree. They are very nice looking horns. Never played one. Daniel Ridder posted a video testing one out a while back. Of course, Daniel is amazing, so it's hard to tell how it would be for an average joe. Only heard one other review by an older fe...

Re: vintage tuba illness

I totally agree with you on the mystic allure of old horns. However, I dont expect them to be great players. occassionally, maybe. I hope for acceptable players with a really nice sound.

Re: Should I buy a Jinbao tuba?

My advice is to try out as many different tubas as you can. It's a huge amount of money if your looking for a newish horn. I prefer old used horns. When I bought my MW 2145 (used), I had it side by side with a brand new one of the same model. I liked the sound and feel/ response of the used one bett...

Re: Best do-it-all CC tuba that isn't 186/188

You guy have me wondering if I should change the lead pipe on my 2145....

However, I have no complaints about it since I had the reciever angle modified so that I dont hurt my neck playing it anymore.

Re: Best do-it-all CC tuba that isn't 186/188

I was going to say the MW 2145, however I agree with the other person about it having a definite volume threshold. The 2155 would be better suited for the large orchestral works . But might be a bit unwieldy for chamber stuff.

What about asking a regular machine shop? A clear description of what you want done, precise dimensions, tolerances, etc.

Re: Norwegian star search

I dont think the york will become a dust collector. Maybe a little, but I bet you'll find places to use it more frequently as you get more comfortable with it.

I cant wait to get mine patched up.

Re: Norwegian star search

I'm kind of a stingy miser now... ---Remember the old saying about the grass is greener on the other side? Sounds to me like the more you play that old York frankentuba, the more comfortable your getting.... Meaning is it really necessary to spend a bunch of cash on a new(ish) horn? I guess it's all...
