Re: Just came back from a Seraph Brass concert…

It would be interesting to see how they resolve that issue. Does that mean she will be a yamaha exclusive musician, or just play a yamaha within that group...?

Re: MaryAnn: Messina Bag Photos

I have never owned or been near a top loader bag while it had been loaded or unloaded. Just looking at the pictures, it seems to me that it would be very difficult to maneuver a large tuba in and out of one. Standing up, you have heft the horn up and out. Probably with one hand while tugging the bag...

Re: Bb sousaphone modification preponderance.

I dont know the exact composition of the wire I used. I got it from my employer. It wasn't a spool, it was a loose coil in an approximately gallon sized package. He said its silver solder, uses it to solder carbide pads to steel "v" blocks for machining operations. I'm sure it's high grade...

Re: Bb sousaphone modification preponderance.

So before I try to hack into the first valve, describe the process. As in after I remove the bend on the top side, is the inside diameter the same as it is on the bottom end meaning the inner slide tubes will slide right in? I would like specifics from those who have done it to ponder before I try i...

Re: Bb sousaphone modification preponderance.

Your right about weight being the biggest issue. That will probably trump a 4th valve. I havent played it yet as it had a catastrophic accident to the, dogleg is it? That's the main repair I'm doing, and new bracing.

Bb sousaphone modification preponderance.

I'm currently working on a 1960s conn sousaphone. While I have it all apart for cleaning and repair, I'm lightly considering adding a fourth valve. I dont need a 4th, but I like having fingering options. So, looking at the valve cluster, adding a piston valve would be extremely difficult. But, there...

Re: Eb Shootout - homemade Monster york vs Norwegian star

""bloke "Playing music is very tactile for us, but not-at-all-tactile to our audiences."" Nailed it. And yes I did notice that the hand position on the star is a little awkward for you. Anyway, I'm very happy for you to have found the horn you wanted. Sent from my SM-S367VL ...

Re: Eb Shootout - homemade Monster york vs Norwegian star

Very big difference between the two. Based on your video, I like the York better. Personal preference, I'm also partial to old and older stuff. I bet the star is much easier to play as its built with modern technology and engineering. If you have the space, you should keep both. People seem to get h...

Re: Norwegian star search

Congratulations! Good luck on the trip home. Cant wait to hear it. Maybe a video playing the Rachmaninoff on the star for a sort of side by side comparison. I really enjoyed your performance of that vocalise.

I'm curious as to what demographic/who is buying these horns up. My guess is schools. Or is it amatuer/hobbyists like myself.

Re: Size matters?

I'm not referring to a specific piece of music. If you had a room full of different tubas, and just went through and noodled on them; what size and bore would you settle on as the most enjoyable to play.

No wrong answers.

Size matters?

So what's your favorite/ideal tuba size/ bore? Not relative to ensemble demands; Just playing for yourself.

I normally prefer 4/4 .700 range.

However, I'm finding the 3/4 .625 eb very enjoyable.

Your turn.

Thank you, very interesting. So the gist is that plastics swell and shrink more greatly.

No oil valves?

Just saw a video on a french horn whereby they said it has composite (plastic) valves (rotary) that dont need to be oiled. Said they're very light and very fast. Anybody familiar with these? More info please. Just curious. Why not on a tuba.

Re: YouTuba

I find u toob videos very helpful. However, when my meinl weston needed repairs, I was not going to attempt that at all. The joint between 4 and 5 valves came unsoldered. My old king, I'll monkey with little easy things. It's in very good condition and I dont want to detract from that condition. The...

Re: BRASS QUINTET..TUBA OR BASS TROMBONE.

I am personally partial to the sound of a tuba. Duh. When I was in college, there were many student brass quintet groups. A small tuba studio and only a few of us were willing to play quintet. So, there were several groups that utilized bass bone and a couple that used euphonium. All played very wel...

Re: My monster Eb build.

I'm really glad you stuck with this horn. Its unique and needs to be accepted and played as such. I think that we are jaded by perfect recordings on top notch instruments by world class, exceptional musicians. If everyone/horn sounded like that, it would be boring. Good luck on your recital. I'm sur...
