Re: ITEA Regional Conferences for 2024

tofu Nailed it. Also, how about a reasonably priced one day pass option for non members. I'm sure there's lots of amature players and HS band teachers that would go for a look. There's not many shops in the US that offer an ***In house*** complete line of mp's and large variety of horns to try. Not ...

Re: ITEA Regional Conferences for 2024

Yup. I was a member when I was in college. We were required to maintain membership in a related professional organization. I gained nothing by being a member, just an economic expense for a person already buried in debt. While I would really like to go to a conference, it's not worth enough for me t...

Re: Backbore effect on intonation?

I have access to cnc equipment, and this is a fun side project for me. I'm not trying to create the 8th wonder or market a product. Just a less expensive way for me to create something I need. If it doesn't work out, aka sucks, I'll probably go that route (denis wick?). Sent from my SM-S367VL using ...

Re: Backbore effect on intonation?

The most basic guideline (were someone to goad me into offering one up) with mouthpieces would be to compare a bass tuba to an alto sax, and a contrabass tuba to a tenor sax. "Stick with alto sax sized mouthpieces when playing an alto sax, and stick with tenor sax sized mouthpieces when playin...

Re: Backbore effect on intonation?

I'm not looking for a magic mp. I just want to see how what differences in certain features affect my horns and me. Buying mps to do this is way too expensive. I have the luxury of being employed in a machine shop (cnc) where I can experiment at material cost. Also, I now own tubas with three differ...

Re: Backbore effect on intonation?

I also have been very curious about backbore and throat diameters on mouthpieces. I intend to do some experimentation this new year. Will post a thread about it when I have made physical progress.

Re: random

That's why trying Besson out is on my bucket list. I want to see for myself. People seem to love or hate them. I haven't been a fan of top action, but my little eb is warming me up to them. I really like old horns. It seems to me that more craftsmanship went into their manufacturing. Fun to hear abo...

Re: I like playing the tuba

I totally agree. Although, I dont get every day. I try to hit at least 3 or 4 a week. After not playing for about 15 years, playing my tuba(s) is a real joy! I'm so glad I didnt sell them.

That horn looks fantastic. I would try to sort out the tuning issues with as little modification as possible.

Re: Tuba Christmas Chicago

[/quote]I attended the same one Grumpikins did. I thought it was a very good event and yes these two college students were off the hook. But judging by the recordings and the snips they played on TV news, these two weren’t prominent from the audience point of view, being mostly drowned out by the o...

Re: Tuba Christmas Chicago

I was slightly guilty of this at the beginning of the tuba Christmas i attended. However, I was the only front facing bell there and I could not hear myself at all because many others were just blasting away. so I was playing louder and louder without realizing. But not blatting. Anyway, after a lad...

Holiday fun.

Went christmas caroling with some friends again. Lots of fun. Car said that the temp outside was 25'. We played at 4 assisted living facilities. This pic was at the one where my grandmother lives. It just happened to be her birthday also. Same age as Dick VanDyke. She really enjoyed the music. https...

Re: Drilling into brass

Was thinking about this recently also. Want to add a water key to my eb tuba after the valve block. Water collects there and the only way to get it out is to spin the horn. Was thinking about trying to make a tool like a pick with a small bend by the tip to go inside the hole and clear the burr........

Re: "I'm getting older, and looking for a smaller tuba, but I still want four valves"

I'm not interested in arguing. I just want to say that this little 3v eb tuba I've been fixing up is quite a bit smaller and lighter than my other tubas. It's really fun to play. I find myself picking it up and playing for 5 or 10 min quite often because of the size. It's just more accessible. And i...
