Not a tuba...single valve bugle info?

Yesterday a fella I work with gave me a slingerland single valve alto bugle. This thing is awesome. All I had to do was wash it up. It seems to have two playing modes, loud and louder! Anything less sounds like there's a wet sock stuffed in the bell. But, wow, at loud it really opens up clear and cl...

Re: finding the age of my 2145

I also tried to contact them about my 2145 for exactly the same reason. Tried their online registration process too. No response to either. Frustrating. It's such a wonderful horn for them to neglect the people who own them like 'red headed stepchild'...... oh well. Just enjoy what we have and leave...

Re: Euph mouthpiece choice for tubaist?

Thank you for your input. Your suggestions are pretty close to what I had in mind based solely on comparing what I have with manufacturer listed dimensions. I think that I will start trolling for a bach 3 or 4 as I dont want to spend a lot on this horn at this point. This is new territory for me. A ...

Euph mouthpiece choice for tubaist?

I'm sure this has been talked about before. But. Question is specifically for tuba players who occasionally double on a small shank euphonium. What is the euph mp you use? I'm not looking for a big debate here, just an idea of what others in this situation use. The euph I just picked up came with a ...

Picked up another horn today.

Today we ventured to a craft show about an hour away and visited a couple nearby antique shops. My son found an olds ambassador euphonium that is in good condition. Mouthpiece, the valves work, ( we were playing it in the shop) most of th slides are free, not badly dented. Just the bell is a little ...

Re: Tubas can be very distracting....

In this instance, the flipping and twirling has nothing to do with water issues. They are trying to "snap" from a resting position to playing position. Marching band style. In a formal concert band setting. Its distracting.

Tubas can be very distracting....

When I attend concerts as an audience member, i usually close my eyes to focus on listening. My kids have been in band for several years now and so I keep my eyes open to see them. I have found that tubas are very distracting. The tubas seem to enjoy acrobatics every time they have rests, even short...

Re: regardless of monetary value or quantity of instruments, tuba-wise, do you currently own exactly what you wish to ow

Yes, for the time being. I currently have; Meinl weston 2145 Cc 1936 King 1240 Bb 1920ish cleveland (pre HN White) Eb 1960s Conn fiberglass sousa (36k?) These horns cover all my hobby wants. The Cc is a real all around dead ringer. The King takes some work intonation wise but has the classic america...

Re: A Note to Tuba Music Composers on Piano Accompaniment

Thank you for reminding me of that. Finding an accompanist was a nightmare. There were too few when I was in school. One semester, I ended up using a woodwind player who took up piano as a secondary. He wasn't terrible but liked to tell you how to play your part and wasn't very fluid on the keyboard...

Re: fundamental problem(s) while playing?

Based on your description, I would say your best option would be to find a local professional instructor and have an in person lesson. Those issues need to be addressed by someone who can see what your doing and show you how to correct them. Just one or two lessons should be enough to set you on th ...

Re: Cosmetic issue with my Kanstul

If you want someone to look at it, you could try https://beemanbrassworks.com/ for a consultation. They're on the east side of cleveland. The owner/operator is a tuba guy. I think that's where I'm going to go if I need something major professionally done.

Re: Cannot play a specific note well

Have you tried that note on a different tuba? Do other notes with 1st valve combo play ok? I wonder if there may some sort of obstruction in your 1st valve. Years ago I had a miraphone 186 that played poorly. I took it to a tech for cleaning and he said that the valves, rotary, were installed incorr...

Whole heartedly agree with brs. Try as many different horns as you can get your hands on before you buy something.

Re: Any thoughts on what I should offer for this old horn

Just for comparison. I paid 95 for the little eb I have. There is a thread here about it. The valves on it are excellent. I thought it was a fair price. Now that I have it in working order, it's a blast to play. So far, I have done all the work myself. It was a self learning project and has been won...
