Re: The Perfect Tuba

My wife gave me this for christmas. I have been chipping away at it slowly. Almost done. I enjoyed the tuba specific parts. The stories/interviews were wonderful. The part about the two fellows in Florida analyzing the different brass alloys was very interesting. The band director parts didnt ...

Re: Quality BBb Tubas

To me your plan sounds good. You know what your going to do, know what features you want. Just make sure you give the horn a good try before you buy. If you spend a grand on a horn that has a few issues, and a grand on repairs by a reputable repair person, you can have a great horn that will treat ...

Re: Rub a dub dub an Eb Bass in the Tub.

I'm curious how much and how often you play this horn. That's a lot of gunk. Agreed that regular cleaning and adequate lubrication are very important. Along with conscientious dietary habits before playing.

There may not be any near you but, Runnings (a farm supply store) has an amazing hardware section stocked with every screw, nut, bolt washer; in imperial and metric sizes; stainless, zinc coated, other. And you can buy just one screw, or a box. I used to go to ace/true value for hardware like this ...

Re: Looking for a harness for my 981.......

I have the neotech harness and it works very well. However, I use a separate strap wrapped around the harness and bottom bow because I found it would slide around a little bit. Also I dont use the clip/strap on the upper bow because it was too restrictive. I move a lot when I play. It is very ...

Thank you. The pistons on my little eb are not plated and I have been contemplating sending them for it. I havent taken any measurements yet. Just something I have been thinking about.

Talking about taking valves down to fit, what is the standard gap between piston and casing?

Re: DCI Costs—a pending collapse

In 2000, I started marching a division 3 corps out of a nearby city. The cost to me was minimal. We did fundraising, hosted a home show and sold program advertising. Our staff was minimal, all music teachers who marched division 1 corps for multiple seasons. The instruction was fantastic. We were ...

Exactly how are piston valves made?

Since I work in a machine shop, I have been thinking about this. My guess is that...

1 valve tubing material is selected. Oversized od.

2 tubing for ports matched to desired bore size.

3 port holes are milled.

4 port tubing is shaped and finagled into the valve tubing.

5 port tubing is silver ...

Re: New to using a stand and my upper back HURTS!

A different option you could try; the Neotech tuba harness.

I bought one because I started doing a xmas caroling gig each year. It's very comfortable. Last summer i also used it with my bell front king in community band because we sometimes stand up for a tune or two. It worked really well both ...

That's really cool. When I was in school i didnt care for Blazhevich, but now i really enjoy them. I find them really helpful with improving my ability to switch between Bb and Cc tubas. Thank you so much for your hard work.

Re: Looking for CC Tuba for College Under $5k in Eastern PA

I'm sorry I went a little overboard about college. As you can tell it was not the right direction for me. It wasn't bad, I learned a lot, grew a lot, accomplished next to nothing in reality. I just dont want other people to learn it's not right for them the way I did. I want the kids coming up to ...

Re: Looking for CC Tuba for College Under $5k in Eastern PA

Many people, especially collegiate teachers, will despise what I'm going to say here.

If your going to undergrad (bachelors) for music education, there is no good reason for you to put the stress of switching/ learning Cc tuba on yourself. I did that because everyone told me I had to play Cc. And ...

Re: That *OTHER* 1971 Mirafone 186 on My Bench

I really love seeing things that someone deemed as junk/trash being successfully resurrected rather than tossed out/scrapped. Even being used as parts to resurrect something else is good. Putting in effort and elbow grease builds character. Great work.
