Re: Reflection on a home repair.

I did some digging around a d came up with another slide to try. It's a little bit undersized, I think that's why I passed it up before. I stuck it in and taped it. Most pitches came up considerably and it was mostly manageable despite leaking badly. The other tuba player who I played it with a few ...

Re: Bell swap?

Silver. Although I was thinking along the lines of a one piece bell swap rather than a detachable bell. I dont know if I can push myself to do it though. Just kicking around the idea.

Bloke, I understand what your saying about finding a different horn. I dont want to replace this horn. I guess for ...

Also note, some places require you to make an appointment to try out horns. Just to be sure they have appropriate staffing to assist you and other customers.

Re: Comparison Question

I cant help you as far as those specific tuba models. But I can pass on the advice that my teacher gave me when I was looking to upgrade in college. Try as many tubas as you can. You might come across one that really surprises you. I did this with my son when we were looking for a french horn and ...

Bell swap?

I have been playing my 1936 Bb one piece recording bell king tuba a lot more lately and the bell is increasingly becoming a nuisance. As in it's big, heavy, and during rehearsals I have to set the tuba down often. IF I were to swap an upright bell on, what are viable bell options? I dont know if I ...

Re: New Tuba Day - Meinl Weston 2145

Congratulations. I really enjoy mine. More so after I had the reciever angled up slightly for better ergonomics. It really caused me severe neck pain. Never had an issue with the 5th valve lever. Honesty, I rarely use it these days. Theres always one or more young collegiate fellows nearby overdoing ...

Re: Low note help?

I agree with all things said above, have one thing to add. When I was playing on a daily basis, notes - including pedals - spoke easily. Now I play maybe once or twice a week and it takes me a half hour or so for my embochure muscles to warm up enough for me to play low D, C, Bb and down to pedal ...

Reflection on a home repair.

Last week I took a leap and brought the little Eb tuba to a rehearsal last week. The other player was on a PT6. It was a blast. But...

Eb, E, F, Gb, G are all nearly a half step flat. When the horn got really warmed up they were much better. Ab, A, Bb, B, C were spot on. I mean really good.

I ...

My wife gave me this for christmas. I have been chipping away at it slowly. Almost done. I enjoyed the tuba specific parts. The stories/interviews were wonderful. The part about the two fellows in Florida analyzing the different brass alloys was very interesting. The band director parts didnt ...

Re: Quality BBb Tubas

To me your plan sounds good. You know what your going to do, know what features you want. Just make sure you give the horn a good try before you buy. If you spend a grand on a horn that has a few issues, and a grand on repairs by a reputable repair person, you can have a great horn that will treat ...

Re: Rub a dub dub an Eb Bass in the Tub.

I'm curious how much and how often you play this horn. That's a lot of gunk. Agreed that regular cleaning and adequate lubrication are very important. Along with conscientious dietary habits before playing.

There may not be any near you but, Runnings (a farm supply store) has an amazing hardware section stocked with every screw, nut, bolt washer; in imperial and metric sizes; stainless, zinc coated, other. And you can buy just one screw, or a box. I used to go to ace/true value for hardware like this ...

Re: Looking for a harness for my 981.......

I have the neotech harness and it works very well. However, I use a separate strap wrapped around the harness and bottom bow because I found it would slide around a little bit. Also I dont use the clip/strap on the upper bow because it was too restrictive. I move a lot when I play. It is very ...
