(Whoops! Managed to post this twice).
Dan Oberloh has posted some pretty detailed piston valve repair reels on Facebook which show a good bit of what you surmise. Pretty neat.

Brass Repair near Milford CT
Can anyone recommend a brass repair shop near Milford or New Haven CT? A colleague has a sousaphone that needs some things soldered on it. And a trumpet with a damaged valve.
Thanks,
Eric

Re: My Tuba & I, Post Yours & You
Eighth grade me with one of my Jr High School horns around 1982. This was a 4v Bb Conn, I’d been thinking it was a 5J but it has a joint up towards the bell that I don’t see in pictures of the 5J.
We also played 4 valve Conn sousaphones - both fiberglass and brass - and had 3 valve King ...

Re: What to do with my ancient Eb Bass Saxhorn?
I suggest that another worthy option is to let another enthusiast buy / have the instrument on the understanding that they’ll put it into better working order and then give it some use. That’d be better, imho, than it gathering dust and it spreads a bit of Tuba joy.
That’s a good suggestion ...

What to do with my ancient Eb Bass Saxhorn?
I played tuba all through junior high and high school, all on rented school hours, and I figured I was done with the tuba when I graduated. However a few years after later I found a tuba for $150 in a pawn shop, and bought it.
The horn turned out to be a really old French 3 valve Eb bass saxhorn ...

Re: Home Depot Find...
I went to Home Depot to pick up a gift card and across from the gift cards I saw something quite interesting. It was an extra large thick plastic tote. My first thought was "bet I could fit a 6/4 tuba in there." It has wheels, a handle and even spot for putting locks or some other security latch ...

Re: 3 vs 4 Valve Tubas/Euphs Pedagogical Use
I remember there was a guy who was super short and slender, (3 years younger), he was so short he had to lay the 186 to the side, and he was one of the top players in the middle school region in DFW). At least at the time, they didn’t start anyone on tuba—it was purely an instrument that people ...

My “worldly folk music group” Sombati at a Ren Faire in Frisco Texas last weekend. We played a mix of 14th to 17th century Italian, French, Irish, & Scottish music, some traditional Moroccan, Turkish, & Bulgarian music, and a couple of newish things that seemed to fit. Fun show.

Re: Post Your Group and Section Photos Here
Me with my world music group Sombati and some of our instruments around 2015. Tuba is a pre-1890 A Lecomte & Sons three valve Eb made in Paris and imported by Root Music in Chicago. Bottom two Ebs wanted to play about 1/2 step flat compared to the rest of the horn. Included a home-built plywood case ...

Re: Tuba Parts and Unobtainium
I've been trying to get a longer tuning slide for my Eastman 836 for well over 2 1/2 years, even bringing the issue to the attention of Chuck Kerrigan who put me in touch with "the right people".
I needed a longer tuning slide for my Willson Eb. I wrote Willson and it was about $450 for them to ...

What is the diameter of the tenon on those? I have a recording bell Martin that I wonder if this would fit.

Re: Who was your teacher?
As best as I can recall my private lesson teachers in 6 years of instruction in public school were:
Ron Tasa
Gary Clark
Gary Carper
Mark Wolfe
Jay Rozen
All but Ron were affiliated with UNT.
Band directors were Don Hamrick, Roger Winslow, Dana Rothlesburger, and Ernie Repass.

Re: Strobe Tuner Repair?
Do you mean possibly a signal generator or a function generator? I have a couple of antique-ish lab grade ones - an HP200 and an HP3310. They don’t have a built in speaker but otherwise sound like what you are describing.
