Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

And because I haven't said it before, I'm not against the idea of replacing the receiver. However, the stock receiver is pretty small, and it's probably one of those sleeve over the lead pipe kind of things. So I'm not exactly sure if a new receiver would easily fit on it, or something like an AGR ...

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

I've seen folks use Stofer Geibs in F tubas, so I have no doubt such a thing will work in your eefer. If I were in your spot, I'd get a British shank Sellmansberger Imperial with a rim of your choice (I like the 32.9mm #2) and a nylon cup extender. The extender makes it deeper, but you can remove it...

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

off on a tangent as usual; what is a "Geib style mouthpiece" that makes it "Geib?" What's different about it? Very roughly ... It's sort of a pear shape, not quite bowl or funnel. Pretty deep, and a very thin and sharp rim. Around 32.7 mm diameter I think. Typically a small back...

Re: Wesex making a piston BBb/CC cimbasso

I'm curious if there was a reason Wessex decided to make this other than Jonathan wanted it (which, to be fair, is a good reason). I don't know of any cimbasso players (or prospective cimbasso players) clamoring for a piston BBb. .... BBb is the most popular key of tuba. I'm sure there are plenty o...

Re: Wesex making a piston BBb/CC cimbasso

I don’t get this layout. Looks like a poor hand position for extended playing and the slide accessibility appears to be lacking. It would be interesting if someone were to rig up a (front action) compensating piston cluster into a cimbasso. And then put first and third slides very close to where th...

Re: YCB-621 appearing on an auction site

"what these sell for" is very very important because they don't play particularly well compared to other stuff which costs approximately the same I M H O.

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

The general issue is that the cost of the work probably exceeds the value of the horn. And no sale of the tuba is going to recover that. At least there's half a chance that someone would want to buy the mouthpiece later on. I may be out of touch, but don't most of those old Eb tubas sell for $500 o...

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

@bort2.0 I really would have a repairman look at and quote replacing or reaming out the receiver before you go out and order a custom shanked mouthpiece for the smaller one.

Re: Wesex making a piston BBb/CC cimbasso

I would expect that the "L" section in the prototype picture would need to be significantly reinforced. To me, it looks like it would eventually bend.

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

Well since it was mentioned... If I were to custom order something, what measurement should I give them to ensure its the correct size? I know it's been posted here before... The end diameter? I'm no good with calipers, I can measure the end of the Denis Wick, but I don't trust my measurement for a...

Re: Miraphone 1291 B-flat intonation vs. 1291/2/3 C intonation

@bloke IIRC, Roger Lewis owned 1291s in both BBb and CC at one time.

I have read that the BBb was better in tune with itself. I have only played the CC.

Re: Wesex making a piston BBb/CC cimbasso

Looks like there are two remove-able bits, the bell section and an L section which connects the bell section to the body of the instrument. It looks like one could rotate things to make that front action if you wanted to. sidebar: I really think the "traditional" (whatever) cimbasso shape ...

No experience, very few opinions... but that won't keep me from running my mouth... The V seam is a one piece bell, the other kind is a two piece. I'm guessing the metal thickness is more consistent on the V seam than it is on the two piece (similar to the handmade vs hydraulically formed b...

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?

bort2.0 I'm probably not being helpful, however pretty much any tuba mouthpiece I put in my Yamaha 631 Eb works reasonably well. Anything I like works well enough. I have put many Geib style mouthpieces which I like in it and tuba noises still come out of the bell. I'd sit down with a tuner and see...
