Re: Conn Improved Precision mouthpiece measurements

My ears were burning. I *had* a 1, 2, and 3, but sold them all as a lot. I don't remember who bought them. The 3 was quite small. Far too small for me to actually use. I can't imagine something smaller than that (the Conn 4) being useful. I'm not even sure the Conn 4 was a tuba mouthpiece. I don't ...

Re: What can you tell me about the Chief mouthpiece?

"I have an pristine original Conn Chief. The throat is very wide. It has an American shank. Interior rim diameter is about 32.6 mm. The rim is quite wide." This is interesting to me, because this description is almost the exact opposite of a 'Conn Helleberg Chief' I owned by in the 1970s and '80s ...

Re: CC tubas -- 4 or 5 valves?

Thanks for being so four thcoming. Four my community band playing these days, four valves on a CC tuba is more than enough. When I entertain the thought of adding an extra valve to my four valve tuba, I just put on my big boy pants and tell myself, "What four are you thinking about adding an extra ...

Re: lap cimbasso

Maybe not what you were looking for, but Kalison (later G&P) made one which could be rested on a chair or lap like a tuba.

Re: boring post, and no pics...

As you are very bright, understand basic mechanics quite well, and have a very good visual memory and imagination, you then understand why it is very difficult to use one of those to bore a hole in the ground at a dead-on 90° angle to the earth. Aww shucks. You turned my attempted joke into a ...

I got the info from Don and messaged Mike. So that is one of your two listed horns identified. It has a low serial number, like 1408, and was purchased by NTSU in the 1950s.

Re: Slides? Over or Under...

When I had a 2165, it was over the top. I recall I needed to go over the top to pull the fourth, so why go through the horn to get to 1, then over to get to 4? I'm only 5 foot 8 (not tall) so I would expect that most folks would be able to do this. I could maybe see how reaching through the tuba ...

British F Tuba register / North Texas / Miami

Mike Johnson in the UK is putting together a British F Tuba register. I understand that both the University of Miami and the University of North Texas both had 3+1 Besson F tubas. If those are still around, is there anyone who could get their serial numbers and send them to Mike? If you don't know ...

Re: Conquering the Pig

Sounds like there is something going on with your horn that isn't totally normal. I have had cerveny tubas where I had to play those notes 1-2/2-3/4, even in the staff I have also heard that they put the 795 bore valves in there to give the horn a little resistance. Yeah, it's silly, but they are ...
