I fought the same battle with the Neo-tech before --**discarding**-- it. Forcefully.
I did try a Meinl-Weston it was, I believe, from Dan Schultz, and it was much better. I then went to a much smaller, lighter horn for stand-up stuff and gifted the M-L to a friend. I doubt anyone will ever be happy ...

Re: New to using a stand and my upper back HURTS!
Chris is indeed a good one. As is the stand.anadmai wrote: Sat Feb 14, 2026 7:23 pm Good question.
It’s a BBC stand. Their manager is a good egg and was I happy to give them the business.
Going to give Bloke’s suggestion a try while I also try to get used to the stand as well.

Re: New to using a stand and my upper back HURTS!
Funny, but, for me, a playing stand does exactly what I want it to do: take the weight off my knees and thighs, provide a solid platform to eliminate balance problems, makes page turning more secure, and assure my posture is good. I am 5'10", similar to your height. I use a cushion behind my back ...

Re: About pitch issues on old instruments
Don't fret that you may be destroying an historic instrument--1949 isn't that. By all means, do the work needed and enjoy playing it without fingering gymnastics. And remember, to remove 5" of tubing, you need only 2 1/2" off the tuning slide or other such slides, so it isn't as daunting as it may ...

Is it just me, mesmerized by the tuba creativity, but were those folks dancing on snow? That would merit a like or 3!

Re: Army Tuba Conference schedule
Looking at the schedule they put out, Thursday and Friday all day is in Minor and Saturday all day is in Loboda. I guess they are stacking the larger groups on Saturday. At least, this way there will not be overlapping problems. Now if there were only schedule break for the bowling alley!!

Always a highlight of the musical year. I think this is something like 7 years in a row?

Re: What to do with my ancient Eb Bass Saxhorn?
Point taken. My guess is that the company is still trading on the saxhorn marketing even as late as 1890-ish.

Re: What to do with my ancient Eb Bass Saxhorn?
I played tuba all through junior high and high school, all on rented school hours, and I figured I was done with the tuba when I graduated. However a few years after later I found a tuba for $150 in a pawn shop, and bought it.
The horn turned out to be a really old French 3 valve Eb bass saxhorn ...

Baritone or, more likely, a tenor [not the British Brassband version of a tenor, but the 19th century definition.]Philip Sciortino wrote: Sun Nov 09, 2025 3:57 pm Thanks to all;
I understand this is a baritone horn, is it?
Not a whole lot of difference, frankly, mostly bore.

Re: Old brass instrumet
Certainly after the late 1880's due to the lyre holder--it's square, not round as in earlier designs. Also, those earlier do not have original water keys.

Re: Old brass instrumet
It has had quite a hard life! The first thing which occurs to me: Where is the tuning slide? The picture doesn't make it clear that the slide beneath the 3rd valve slide actually moves and is clear of the bottom bow.

Re: most brass repair videos on Facebook...
I always hire a jazz trio to play over in the corner of the workroom when heating up bells with a hobby torch to temperatures that don't do anything...and using gadgety tools that I would never buy.
Cringy! I couldn't watch it, after noting all the mistakes in the first 2 minutes--and I am not a ...
