Re: What did you play today?

I've been off the horn since July and finally was able to get back to community band Tuesday. Took a few minutes to get flexibility back, but otherwise did pretty well. Doing a concert in three weeks with a lot of heavy classical music transcriptions. Fun.

After surgery and months of PT, arm hurt a ...

Re: Mnozil coming to the US

Not just the trumpets. When I saw them in Oxford, Alabama a few years back, the last encore started with the three trombones, and six rows back I had to cover my ears. It still amazes me how they can play with such fabulous tone and blend after almost two hours while parting your hair from fifty ...

Re: A couple of weeks in a row, in early December

@bloke, I'm wrong again. They've done FIVE Christmas albums (one is a greatest Christmas hits compilation), and this is from the first one. I goofed.

The first one also contains a really good version of Let It Snow, lead sung and arranged by Lee Loughnane, the trumpeter.

I believe they did two Christmas albums and this is the second.

You need to repost the complete link to the photos. The one in the post is an abbreviation for the actual link and does not work.

Re: Music Scanning Software

I've used ScanScore for Mac to scan treble clef brass band Bb Bass parts and put them into bass clef. It's not an easy process and there are tons of errors to correct, but it's better than doing it by hand. Its editing and typesetting tools are pretty good. It's definitely time consuming, but gets ...

Re: Mercer and Barker Mouthpieces.

They're showing up more and more. I love the comfortable rims since I can't stand flat rims or a sharp bite between rim and cup. Most are somewhat heavyweight. I use a MB3 in brass band, and own a Tim Buzbee Lone Star. I'll probably buy a MB3 “Power” soon. The Lone Star is an F/Eb mouthpiece that's ...

Re: What mouthpiece do you use?

I only play a JP377 compensating Eb. I use a Mercer and Barker MB3 for brass band and a Kellyberg for concert bands or anywhere I need easier/more resonant low register.

Re: New player YBB-105

I've steered several people changing from bone or baritone to tuba toward the Wick 4L. It's a good transition mouthpiece, diameter not too big and with a deep, wide cup to help with developing good tuba tone.

Re: $500 1946 Silver “Naked Lady” Conn 20J

You got a real steal with this one. Lee Stofer told me years ago that the key to the 2XJ's intonation was keeping the leadpipe and valve tubing dent free. You have enough dings there that taking the dents out should improve matters.

Re: For You MP Gurus Out There

I think the Warburton 28-D might fit you well. The cup diameter is the same as the Bach 18's, and the rim is like a slightly rounded Helleberg (not the flat rim).

I searched for the JP279B and found the ad easily enough. Then I took a careful look at the pictures and then looked again. I'll admit to being plenty oblivious at times, but I only see one water key. Am I missing the obvious?

A horn of that design seems like it would be gurgling constantly and ...

Re: Tuba Intonation - Rant

Sometimes you can get lucky. Last month while coming back from a lip injury, I played a banged-up borrowed St. Pete rotary BBb for three rehearsals and a couple of concerts. The horn had long, hard valve strokes and was very sluggish in response, but the tone was pretty good, and the intonation ...
