What Euphonium does Mulcahy use?
I was wondering if anyone knows what euphonium Michael Mulcahy plays? Awhile back I heard him live and never heard a euphonium with so much presence before.

Hey all,
I'm looking for a 5/4 CC Rudy Meinl tuba. I know these are kinda rare to come by but wondering if anyone is looking to sell theirs or knows of one for sale. Thanks in advance!

@matt g
Thanks for all of that info.
I was wondering in the spirit of this thread and comparing tubas. How does your 2165 compare to the Eastman and Nirschl York tubas? Have you ever had a chance to play them back to back? I’ve always had an eye for the 2165 after playing one in college.

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
bloke Thanks for posting that clip. It sounds amazing. Is that York or style of York in the photo close to or pretty much the new tuba Yamaha just came out with? If it is and has that sounds I’d be really interested to try and play one of those now as well. To throw a tangent in everything and e ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
Rick Denney Thanks for your history lesson. I love learning about the history of our instrument, the people who played them and where we are going. I love the way you describe the sound characteristics as well. By the way you described them, in my head I should just stick with a York style (I still ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
To add another comparison how are the Alexander tubas compared to the Rudy? Are they much more alike than a York copy and a Rudy?

Thanks for that call out. Figuring out the quirks of new tubas are always a fun time. Hopefully I can experience it on a Rudy lol.

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
@Sousaswag Thanks! I appreciate you input and for keeping an eye open for me. I doubt we’ll see one pop up for a longgg while. But I’ll be crossing my fingers. Do you know if Rudolf Meinl sends tubas to conferences? Best bet is to reach out to @Lee Stofer who is the USA importer for Rudolf Meinl. I’ ...

Thank you for that break down. I think at this point I’m sold on a Rudy after reading all the replies. Or should I say I’m sold on the idea of tracking one down to play test.

That's good to know the Eastman wasn't completely left behind. That's what I'm currently on.
I'd love to have a 3/4 Rudy. They are really magical tubas. But I'd want the 5/4 for my main big C tuba. Unfortunately I feel like that's going to be really hard to find haha.

Thanks for your input. I would have loved toe hard a comparison between the Rudy and all the York copies. Have you had a chance to sit in a orchestra with each? If you did how did you feel like the blend with the section/over all orchestra feel and sound?

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
I don't dislike RM tubas, but I've owned all three sizes with five valves in C length, and I'm personally sort of over them. I believe - as people get older, they get over a lot of stuff. They figure out what they like more and what they like less. Younger people will judge them as grumpy and set ...

I guess now the hardest part of trying to find one to buy/play will be the challenge. I'd have to sell my current tuba as well. Unless anyone wants to trade lol.

Thanks for your response. The Rudy looks massive next to the already massive Holton!

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
bloke Thanks for your reply and insight. You message isn't too long. I like reading all that information. I'd rather have an essay than a sentence :teeth: Thank you again! I noticed the flair of the Rudy bell is like no other (that I've seen) and definitely different than York style tubas. Does ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
Good luck FINDING a Rudy for sale. They’ve become rarer these days. I’ve never played them back to back, but to me, the Rudy is just more “work” to play than the York whatevers. (Insert clone name here). It’s been so long that I can’t comment on intonation, but I think in part of the Rudy’s size and ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
There's a YouTube channel for a guy in Australia his name is Steve Rosse. I actually think he's American, but he lives and plays in Australia. He has several videos comparing his Rudy 5/4 to a Nirschl 6/4. Some of the point of this comparisons was B flat versus C, but I think the style of the tuba ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl vs
I've owned the former - with five valves and a second slide trigger. I've played the latter. What sorts of comparisons are you seeking? I've also owned the 3/4 and 4/4 models of RM and counterintuitively, the 5/4 one was the easiest to play in tune. Hey Bloke, Thanks for your response. These might ...
