Re: Just saw new Mnozil show...

I saw them play in Chicago like 15 years ago. They are the loudest group I've ever heard, when the fanfare they were playing peaked I thought my brain had froze.

Re: TFFJ bait: trombones

88h, but for a really nicely made budget option, look at the Benge 165f Those are really nice, I bought a pristine example for $500 like 12 years ago. Very zippy, could be delightfully annoying in the low range and a lot of fun to play. I was primarily a bass trombonist so it was a great contrast ...

Re: obscure things remaining on "tenor tuba" list check-off (Janáček - Sinfonietta)

From wiki-

"Brass
4 Horns in F
9 Trumpets in C*
3 Trumpets in F
2 Bass trumpets*
4 Trombones
2 Euphoniums (as "Tenor Tubas")*
Tuba"

Sweet Calamity Jane. Do you know if they're they using the F trumpets bloke?

Re: The best...

I was going to say the best small F tuba is a big euph but then I remembered that all the small F tubas I've played have been some of the best playing F tubas I've played. 🤣 Yamaha 621, Cerveny 653 (awesome tuba!), Rusk York F, both small MWs,...

Re: tuba ownership / emotional attachment

I sold the tubas I sold for various reasons (didn't play well, was trying to get a trombone cruise ship gig) and don't really miss them but I do miss my Olds marching trombone and contrabass trumpet. The Olds was really nice but I was a little ticked at the issues it had that weren't revealed by the ...

Re: Anyone familiar with a St. Petersburg 206-L 4-valve EEb tuba?

The 5 valve version I played at Midwest like a decade ago was awesome. Great sound, very easy to play (felt like a piston horn) and it had a great low register. I liked it more than both Miraphone Stars, not sure if I played the rotary MW Eb. They don't have a great reputation so it's possible I ...

Re: 5 Pitches of Tubas

I can read euph in treble clef fine but all the ledger lines in bass clef when playing wiggle finger music gets my eyeballs floating in my sockets. Euph music seems higher than low tuba music seems low. 😂

🤯 I think I sold mine about a decade ago for like 90 bucks. It was way too shallow for me, I found a PT48 did what I wanted out of it better.

Re: Slide tuba

Second horn down is another example of a slide tuba thing. https://www.robbstewart.com/contrabass-trombones-eb Complete speculation: Given this had a 4 valve setup and other good parts, it was probably chopped up and used to make a viable tuba. The way that thing is laid out makes it look to be a ...

Re: ...the new shallow mouthpiece that I designed (and have sold) for cimbasso

Interesting. I use a Josef Klier KBP2C (30mm, shallowest cup) in my small bore Eb cimbasso, articulation is a struggle and I play it a lot better with a tuba mp. It's a bass trombone shank though and I also worry about going too deep with the cup. I was recommended a Schilke 62, iirc, a small shank ...

Re: controversial: Will orchestral principal trombone players ever rethink?

Back when I was playing bass trombone, a dual bore Getzen 1062, I picked up a mint Benge 190F for like 500 bucks. I'd never seriously played tenor before and it was a blast- light, sharp and a far better fit for my booze rock band than the chainsaw. The slide was way too narrow for me and I ended up ...

Re: Catholic church choir lofts

Episcopal is the same. The 5'8" guy drags his three timpani up there, I drag a couple of different tubas up there. There are one-holer restrooms on either side of the main doors to the sanctuary. The brass quintet is always broken up on either side of the organ console. No, there is no elevator ...

Re: 6/4 glut

So well, ok, what about that (6/4?) Nirschl I played? not only was it EASY to play -- like the NStar -- but certainly not woofy -- a very clear sound. So what is this woofiness about? Not that I EVER would attempt to carry that thing around or even hold it up long term. I could ask the owner to ...

Re: New plan for a BBb

That's a great suggestion. Shorten the brass elbows instead of the inner and outer tubing. I keep all of the length of the pull, but I still get an overall shorter slide. I also found that the D below the staff might be the one sharp note, so I still have the 1st valve pull to fix that if for some ...

I think I'll finally be able to do the Valparaiso University TC again this year, I had conflicts the last two years. I'm still grateful I was able to move back to Indiana a few years ago, I had no interest in the Chicago TC when I lived there and sure as hell aren't making a trip just for that. My ...

Cool stuff! What do you use for standing? I've seen trad jazz guys and the German Brass use a stand you can stand up to and not have to hold it at all. I used a rifle strap for strolling jazz with an F tuba, probably didn't weigh 35 pounds though. :tuba:

Re: vintage bass trombone timbre/sonority

If I were still playing I'd probably try to get a 6B or even a 5BF as a counterpart to my Getzen 1062. I owned a Benge 190F for a while that was a blast, it was just too narrow for my fat head. I've never played a vintage bass other than one Bach (silver, 10.5" bell, Bb/F/E) so I have no other ...

First valve, pull/push if needed. So much easier and doesn't sound that different, if at all.

Re: What IS this thing? -- a trombone-aruba?

Have you tried an American baritone? King makes 4 front valve horns with upright and recording bells. It would sound a little leaner than a British style comp euph and you'd have front valves. I like playing my comp euph, especially once I learned the low range, but really don't like top valves ...
