Re: Rudolf Meinl Tuba review

I’m over wanting to have the biggest tubas as daily drivers, but I sure would like to give one of those RM giants a toot!

Re: Question - Expanding a tuning slide

They can be burnished to fit. They (“technicians…”) have to have the right stuff and the “right stuff.”

Re: Rudolf Meinl Tuba review

The HS ones around here were from Cussed ‘Em. Lots of the “old school” RM 3/4 & 4/4 BBb’s.

There was one school that had a bunch of the 4/4 HB BBb’s. It was a huge powerhouse band school. They’re now a very modest program.

Re: Rudolf Meinl Tuba review

There used to be a lot of RM tubas around. Even some of the (fancier) high schools had them. Two RM’s really grabbed me. A “5/4” CC… and a raggedy 5 valve F. That F was magical. Nearly played itself. I heard it ended up in a dumpster at the end of its life. I tried to save it, but failed. I was too l ...

Re: eBay: Miraphone 1291 5v BBb carcass (no valves/slides)

Asking price is definitely a bit high… Making an offer looks to be possible. I’ve owned a bunch of former service band instruments. On occasion, they arrived with some odd, disabling “adjustments.” Nothing that couldn’t be easily undone. I’ve heard from former members that replacement criteria varied ...

Re: Rudolf Meinl Tuba review

The WASO instruments are, I’m sure, great instruments! Cam traveled to Diespeck to be involved in the final touches and to bring at least some of them home in person.

Glad to hear you’re sitting in the seat, JC! Best wishes to Cam, too!

Re: If a 981 and 983 mated…

Very few of the YEB-631’s were sold (assuming that is the model you bought and flipped). Yamaha couldn’t give them away. They were (comparatively) very heavy and had some unusual pitch tendencies. It was a parts bin horn that was put together in a hurry. We had several of the prototypes around here f ...

If a 981 and 983 mated…

If a 981 and 983 mated… You’d get a 980. I had one of these some years back (had the opportunity to try it and took it). Nice Eb with a little more focused sound because of the 17” bell. https://www.dillonmusic.com/used-besson-be980-1-eb-tuba-sn-08300804.html?id=108990331 https://cdn.shoplightspeed.c ...

Re: lap tuning slides

All the above is good. I’ve used Lava in various capacities. As far as prepared stuff out of a jar, I like the HETMAN UNI-LAP. Easy to use, doesn’t embed, and washes out pretty easily. I had some for a long time, but have since run out. I’ll probably buy some more. I’d also like to add for the unfami ...

Re: Speaking of buffing…

It was $134 on Amazon. They popped up and have now disappeared. The link is now dead. Closest one I can find (looks exactly the same, but painted a different color… probably the same maker in china…) is $400.

Correctly priced items, tubas included, will sell if there is a matching buyer.

Re: Willson 2900 bell throat size?

Welcome to Western Tennessee…, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the Willson 2900 2nd valves aren’t too long… They're too long for fourth-space A, but - otherwise - not. There are only 4-valves (ok...defacto 7) on those compensating things...That's not enough to t ...

Ha! Too late! You already did!

It’s just a design choice made in Flums. All instruments have onboard compromises, even compensators. Not necessarily a criticism.
