Re: Holton or Conn
A properly put together Holton 345 is an excellent 6/4 tuba (in BBb) and not a super expensive way to get into the big tuba world. They also have some of the most modern qualities in terms of valve layout and design. The Holton "Mammoth" tubes were usually 3 or 4 valve top action and are ...

Re: Holton or Conn
A "mammoth" is typically a Martin (Handcraft). Those are quite good big BB tubas but rare to find. Usually with top action valves and with three. Four Valve Variants exist as well as front action. Upright and Bell Front Options. Martin Tubas *need * bits to be played properly. Holton 345 (or 340s ...

Holton or Conn
you who are more experienced, what would be the main difference between a conn 6/4 and a Holton 6/4?
For example, a Conn 20J and a Mammoth, Which of these would be better? which of these would have a bigger sound?

Re: C.G Conn 20j
Over the years, Conn changed the weight of the horns. I don't know if they used different alloys or different thicknesses of metal, or whatever. I've put 20J's on scales over the years, and they've varied from 26-29 pounds. I also had a G&W Bayamo on the 25J when I weighed it, so it may have ...

Re: Maximum price Tuba Conn 2xj series
The view we get on youtube of the amateur music scene in Brazil is ... different, and maybe somewhat misleading, but there are for sure some guys who play in the big church wind ensembles who love their big brass. A scene that has funded some experiments with oversized saxophones that wouldn't ...

Re: C.G Conn 20j
A 20J can weigh 52 pounds if you've dropped a couple of 12-packs of beer down it. College kids. My 25J weighed 31 pounds (no brew). So... doing the math if the 20j is 26lbs and 25j is 31lbs, roughly speaking the 4th valve circuit adds 5 lbs? And maybe those who get 50lb readings are on... Neptune ...

Re: Maximum price Tuba Conn 2xj series
You will NEVER get $4300 out of that tuba. Ever. 2XJ's are probably worth at maximum, to me, $2,000 in good shape. The fact that this tuba has been "overhauled" still doesn't make it a near R$ 5,000 tuba to me. It looks to be in great shape, but if the valves haven't been replated/honed, it's not ...

Re: Maximum price Tuba Conn 2xj series
Lee Stoffer recently had a 20J with original lacquer listed for about $2000. You know if Lee went through it has to be good. I was set to pay $3500 for a silver 25J (with a Kanstul bell instead of original) that was in mint condition. I backed out because I really didn't have a good use case for an ...

Maximum price Tuba Conn 2xj series
hello everyone, sorry for suddenly creating several posts here on the forum, I'm new here and I wanted to learn more from you on the forum, one question I have is about the value of Conn tubas... do you think a tuba from Conn brand and 2xj series is it valid to pay up to what amount on these tubas ...

Re: C.G Conn 20j
Mine weights 26 lbs. If you google you will find a bunch of people quoting the Jacksonville State Marching Southerners website claiming that the 20J weights 52 Lbs and the 24J weighs 60 Lbs. These numbers are just plain wrong, and are basically 2X the actual weight. Thank you very much, it helped ...

Re: Help me Tuba Conn 15j
"clarifying doubt"... I really like that expression, and don't know if I've ever heard it before. I'm wondering if you just coined it. I may have to save that in my mind and use it when appropriate. Thank you. :smilie8: the expression "clarify doubt" is used a lot here in Brazil, that's why I said ...

Re: Help me Tuba Conn 15j
I may be wrong but, I think a whole bunch of the front action small bore Conn tubas (that were made beginning in the late 1970 's) use the same pistons, including the 5J - which is still made, these days. It seems logical to me that if only one of them has a number on it matching your serial number ...
