Re: How closely do main slide positions (room temperatures) line up with predictions (based on physics calculations)?

Looking at it from a different perspective, take a look at my F tuba ("mash buttons and blow", no slide-pulling, barn-door-wide "slots"...built in a dirt-floor building in Communist East Germany)...They didn't have any tricky formulas, and none of their other models played anywh...

Re: a type of music that you've never played that you wish you had played or wish that you do play?

I want to play stuff that people want to hear, or sing along with, or dance to, or be happy near. So polka, swing, big band, easy jazz (trad jazz? dixieland?). I'm guessing polka might be the easiest to find opportunities around here.

Texas Brass Fest 2024

It’s the second annual Texas Brass Fest in Round Top, TX, May 25, 2024. Enough people liked it last year to try again, I guess. This year, there will also be some small ensembles outside between the four main bands. My band will be playing movie music this time, which I hope will be more fun for a w...

Re: another annoying bloke post: "legato" vs. "technical" etudes

At the North American Brass Band Association get together last weekend, they divide the solo contest pieces in several dimensions -- instrument, performer age, etc. -- including "slow" and "technical". yes...and the education community also grades compositions by difficulty and (...

Re: Wessex Linz and Berg

One incidental thing that got my attention: it's surprisingly heavy. It's essentially the same size and shape as mine, and when I swung it up off the floor to play, it didn't handle the same at all. Not bad -- it feels sturdy -- but surprising. Now that I look at the Berg web page again, I see that...

Re: Wessex Linz and Berg

I tried out a Berg last weekend in an exhibit hall that was quiet enough to hear, and liked it. It was easy to play -- that's mostly a short way of saying that it's really similar to what I'm used to, which is not a bad thing at all. Nice sound, responsive, in tune with itself, fun to play. The valv...

Re: fundamental problem(s) while playing?

There's a certain type of player that pays too much attention to how they sound to themselves, while paying little attention to how they sound in the room. Most all of that type tend to underplay...ie. play confidentially. Usually (to me) even up close it's not what I would prefer to hear... ...NOT...

Looks like it works like a double horn: the main rotors are doubled, with a valve to select whether you use the F side or the Bb side. I can't find enough valve tubing to really be sure, though.

Re: NABBA Championships this weekend

My second section band played the test piece late in the day (surely the judges had enough by then), but we play very early Saturday for choice piece, so I’m looking forward to enjoying lots of bands after that without any stress. I listened to the live streams. Y’all set the bar very high for the ...

What was available when you were in college?

They were handing out BBb 186s when I signed up for tuba/euphonium ensemble class for fun, which seemed pretty nice to me, but I was a non music major putting most of my attention on bassoon, so I wasn’t picky.

Does “not yet kicked out of my community bands” count as “can play tuba”?
