Re: For all the historians out there...recording bells?

This is Enrico Caruso singing "Cantique de Nöel" in 1916 with some very lucky tuba doofus, who, though nameless to us, has been immortalized with one of the greatest tenors of all time. I wonder who he was and what tuba he was playing. Given that the recording is from 1916, and it is a Victor ...

Re: The Harvard Tuba - the full story is now on YouTube

In creating my video on the Harvard Tuba, linked above, I discovered that this historic horn was debuted the same year as Cesar Franck's one-and-only Symphony (1889), and in the very same city (Paris). So, I had more than enough reasons now to finally get to know this musical masterpiece - and it ...

The Harvard Tuba - the full story is now on YouTube

Hi all - I've been playing around a lot with iMovie these past few months, and decided to create an audiovisual version of my research on the Harvard Tuba - just to get this fascinating story out to more people. If you're interested, and have 33 minutes to devote to it, here's the link. Enjoy! https ...

The Harvard Tuba in its native environment!

Hi all - I had the chance to drop in on the Harvard Tuba this past week, to see its recently upgraded home in the Harvard Band Room. Details and additional photos are in my most recent blog post: https://tubapastor.blogspot.com/2022/07/a-special-visit-to-harvard-tuba.html . Enjoy! Dave with Michael ...

Rescuing a 1925 Pan American 64-K Sousaphone

Hi all - another laid back Saturday, allowing me to finally tell the story of a 1925 Pan American (so, Conn) 64-K that my son and I rescued back in 2011. Enjoy!

Re: "How much is that giant helicon in the window?!"

When looking at weights listed on these older horns, I think it’s often difficult to disentangle truth from marketing. Indeed! However, the only other reference to the size of this oversized helicon that I could find mentioned that the weight was 63 pounds (matching what was said in The Review ) ...

"How much is that giant helicon in the window?!"

Hi all - I've been learning more about C. G. Conn's New York Branch Store (1897-1912 or so), and learned that, for a time, the giant helicon Conn built for Frederick Innes' band was featured in the front window. Here's the post about that: https://tubapastor.blogspot.com/2022/04/conn-makes-monster ...

Re: C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

@Dave Detwiler, another one to add to the list: https://www.tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=4040 Conn had a Czech-made stencil and called it a “99J”. Thanks, Matt! I'll need to decide at some point what to do with stencils. So far, I have kept to only what has come out of the Conn factory, and car ...

Re: C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

Hi all - I further edited this list, based on the helpful input I received from various sources. I also added a separate list showing the chronology of Conn's Wonderphone or Recording tubas. Re: C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

I've gotten some input from elsewhere that there was a "Donatelli Model." Know anything about that? Would that have been a custom order, or something anyone could purchase? So far, I have found no record of such a model in an extant Conn publication. But I've got tons of gaps in those, so share if ...

Re: C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

@Dave Detwiler, one thing missing from the model number list would be the modern 52/54/56J CC tubas. I’m not 100% sure of the dates of manufacture, but I think they’d warrant inclusion for completeness. Thanks! I only had access to catalogs through 1988 (with many missing along the way, of course). ...

Re: C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

Cool list. I'm thinking the jumbo model was different than the 1 off jumbo tuba picture in the news clipping that made the rounds last year. The "jumbo" model was the orchestra grand model renamed possibly, or am I mistaken? Also I'm wondering about the 32K. Previous posts on tubenet call it a ...

C. G. Conn Basses - An Updated List

Hi all - here's what I've pulled together on this rainy Saturday. It's a work in progress, but it provides the most accurate list to date of Conn Basses. Please comment if you know specifics about any of the dates - or if you're certain I'm missing something. Enjoy! https://tubapastor.blogspot.com ...

Re: The "tuba whisperer" works his magic!

Considering the age, and – if the valves don’t look that hot (??) – you might experiment with mixing 30W into your oil just until the valves begin to slightly slow down. Play it then, and determine whether it plays better, and you might then have a diagnosis. Double negative here, but it does not lo ...

Re: The "tuba whisperer" works his magic!

Looks great! How does it play?! For people like Matt, I'm convinced that the issue isn't usually "doing the work," but rather "having the time to do the work." I sure hope that man has an apprentice to soften the blow of his one-day well-deserved retirement. It plays way better than it did when I ...
