My new Cerveny 601-5MR CC tuba came with a 3/4 tone drop on the fifth valve, left hand mount. Loved it.

Re: lip flexibility exercises by Dr. Charles Colins

Every so often, I pull out the (trumpet is all I've got) Schlossberg book...tedious, but beneficial. Schlossberg book. There's some memories. In 1954 I went for my regular lesson with a Hollywood studio musician, Hyrum Lammers, and arrived early. On dock was a young trumpet player from Los Angeles ...

I still have my copy (for trumpet) which I bought in 1953 when in high school.

Re: Sacramento CL: Miraphone 188

My favorite tuba. Ace, hope it works out! I was not able to work out a deal on this horn. The seller is a very nice guy, and his price is reasonable. Someone is going to be a lucky player if they get this 188. I have not owned a tuba for the past three years, but I needed a tuba soon for some ...

It's only 80 miles from my Berkeley CA home. I sent an offer last night, all cash and pickup. Haven't heard anything back, yet.

Wanted: Los Angeles Olds tenor or bass trombones

Anybody out there with an F. E. Olds tenor or bass trombone made in Los Angeles? The original Olds company was based in Los Angeles from around 1899 until 1956 (two different street addresses, but both in LA), and thereafter in Fullerton until 1979. A Fullerton Olds is considered an "original" Olds ...

Nice jeans you have there, Joe. Right out of your repair shop? Ha. BTW, those instruments look pretty impressive. Is the cimbasso an airhog?

Meinl Weston 2145, with PT 50 mouthpiece. Easy decision.

My lacking confidence statement is that it’s Conn or King copying the slide layouts from European made horns like the my did for Helleberg.
I think you are correct.

Not mentioning names, but I've heard with good authority that some tuba players often play while high.

Re: Mouthpiece question.

When I was playing for 10 years in various high-quality community orchestras, I found the best over all mouthpiece for me was the PT-50. And that was on a number of different tubas---Mira 186 and 188; Cerveny 601-5MR; and MW 2145. It may be significant that the mouthpieces the factories shipped with ...

Tale of two shops

Gone out of business. I went down the avenue about two miles and found another music store which had changed hands ...

I particularly liked #4 and #6. You have composed some interesting pieces, worthy of publication. Much too hard for many players, but stimulate practice activity. Keep up the good work.
