Re: RIP Floyd Cooley

I last talked with him on the phone in 1995, 27 years ago when he was living about three blocks away from my home in Berkeley CA. Great player. Long time principal tuba in San Francisco Symphony. Wonderful man, very friendly and supportive.

Re: Lighter Springs for my VMI 3302

would these work in a meinl 2145? the valves in my horn wear my hand out. i was thinking of trying lighter ones. the guy i bought it from was a giant of a fellow with huge hands, i guess he needed the xtra hard action or something. Yes, they will work on a MW 2145. When I bought my MW 2145 from our ...

Re: Miraclone

The MiraClone 410 CC tuba is the BEST value tuba on the market. You have mentioned your small body size; thus, it might very well be too big for you. Play one. You'll be surprised how it plays in tune and produces a golden, burnished tone throughout the range.

Re: hearing

I am aging. I can hear from 23 Hz to 13,350 Hz, but I have serious blank spots due to damage suffered while I was in the Army. I have a complete dead zone around 10,250 to 10,500 (more or less) and then the tone comes back very strong. This happens in a few more places between there and my top-off ...

I'm no tech, but that damaged side likes very serious. And, costly to repair. I hope that Joe or Elephant or other techs will offer comment.

Re: Any MW 2145 or 2155 out there?

I understand your interest in the MW 2145. Of the three different tubas I used in church and in Oakland's Prometheus Symphony Orchestra over a span of ten years, I got very favorable comments from the audience (MW 2145 big valve model); brassmates and conductor (Cerveny 601 CC); and church ...

Re: Conn EEb Sarrusophone

In 1953, I saw two of these instruments in use in a large concert band from the San Diego CA area's huge Grossmont High School. They were playing at a regional music festival in the California competitions. Placement was near the euphoniums and bassoons. On the band's program were Wagner's ...

Re: WTB: cheapo bass trombone

I bought one of those Benge knock-offs new for $395 from an Idaho dealer about 20 years ago after selling my real Benge 290 bass trombone. The knock-off was labelled E. H. Durand. It was built as well as the real 290 and sounded just as good. I sold the Durand to a Missouri school district for $900 ...

Re: Mack Brass 410 CC tuba weight?

Anybody out there in their 70's playing a 186 CC or Mack Bras 410? I am considering it. I owned a 410. IMHO, it is one of the best bargains in the world of tubas. The instrument is a pretty good copy of the 186 and plays about as well, even better according to some. New 410's are around $2000. I am ...

Ditto the MW 2145 CC. I loved that tuba, and played it in a good orchestra for eight years. Sold it to a young Texan on his way to School of Music in Denton.

#33 in the tuba book. Because I don't presently have a tuba, I play all the studies on my French horn and C valved trombone.

I wonder if that Cerveny 601 BBb is the same one that was owned and played by a former tubist in the Dallas Symphony? It was depicted in an old issue of TUBA magazine. The guy used it to record one of the Shostakovich symphonies.

The one with the b&w picture - based on the tonal/rhythmical pallet - can be nothing other than R. Strauss. I've heard that piece a few times (on the radio - I'm certain that I don't own a recording of it), know that I've not played it, but cannot recall its name. The guy in the photo is the ...

I have always liked the Chicago Symphony brass. My favorite is the conclusion to Franz Schmidt's Symphony 2. Check out the enormous sonority of the brass section, particularly the trumpets. It is, uh, breathtaking.

Re: Tuba suddenly playing flat.

This could be construed as an insulting question but is not meant that way. Is there any chance that two slides got switched, perhaps by someone mischievous who thought it would be funny? Most tubas you can't do that but I don't know what you've got. Or someone pulled them way out and you never ...
