Your wife was unhappy when you purchased 7 tubas? You are lucky she isn't planning your funeral. I hope you can turn a good profit selling those instruments.

Re: Holst Suite 2 technical work-around suggestion
Some of Fennell's tempo choices were, uh, interesting. In general, I liked his work. Almost thirty years ago, I was playing 2nd horn in a good quality community concert band. The 1st horn was Fennell's second wife, Jennifer (?) She gave first-hand commentary about Fennell's decisions, including his ...

Re: FS: Nice Conn 99J/Cerveny stencil 5v CC & hard case…pick up only in Ohio-$2,500
I always thought the thinner brass was for sonic reasons. Case in point: My jumbo Cerveny 601-5MR CC tuba, circa 1995, had a resonant, lovely sound unequaled by any of the 15 or so tubas I have owned over the years, including Miraphone 186's and a marvelous Miraphone 188 with gold brass.

Re: How do you pronounce “Cerveny”?
It is pronounced "Chair-vin-eee" or, possibly, "Chair-vi-knee", accent on first syllable. It means the Red One. The company's founder, V.F. Cerveny came from a line of red-haired people. Source of my information is my neighbor who is native born Czech. She is an associate of the School of Law at my ...

Re: Cringe Worthy Cerveny
I bought a new Cerveny CC 601-5MR in or around 1995. Charlie Krauss arranged to have it drop shipped from the factory. I have never encountered such beautiful and protective packing. The box was big enough to hold a small refrigerator. The metal seemed a bit thinner than my other tubas, but the tone ...

Re: New horn... Again!
You mention that you are an aggressive player and sometimes splatter notes all over the place. Not sure what settings you play in, but do you really need to be aggressive to the point that your attacks splatter? I have known pro players over the years that can rattle the windows with clear, loud ...

Re: FB: MW 45 SLP
I had one that I bought for $2800 on eBay. The seller said it purportedly was used at one time by the Detroit Symphony tubist. There was a repair bill in the case signed by Alan Baer who was Milwaukee connected at that time. Alan appraised the horn at $5000. Great and glorious tone color on that ...

...I remember when: A new car's muffler and battery was shot by 60,000 miles or so, and replacement mufflers usually didn't last 30,000 miles. Wheel of Fortune was hosted by Chuck Woolery, and contestants had to spend the money they won on prizes OR put it On Account, and it got wiped out if they ...

Re: Vintage Bach 7
When I bought a used Conn 52J CC tuba, the seller had been running a Bach 7 on the thing. I liked the sound but not the feel. I reverted to my PT 50 and my Faxx 18.

Re: Please school- mouthpieces and high range
I mostly used a PT-50 in my ten years on CC tuba in a good quality community orchestra. It took me up to F above the staff with no particular struggle and the low range was fairly easy. Quite resonant, actually. However, in an orchestra contracted by the Berkeley Community Chorus to do three ...

Re: Cimbasso?
' great singing, and a handsome stage presence. I like the way she stared down the audience for the first two minutes or so, I've earned that look nearly every day of my life it seems... :red: At least you earned it. That's far better than getting something for nothing. Best, Ace
Cimbasso?
Here's a link that might be interesting to some board members, particularly those who speculate about tuba vs. cimbasso in Verdi operas. In the following excerpt, I think a cimbasso would have been a better choice than a tuba. The tuba playing sounds very competent, but is not as good a blend with ...

Re: What’s on Your Stand for 2022? (Warning: crappy Bach content ahead)
What’s on your stand for 2022? After many years, I’m revisiting the Bach Cello Suites. VERY challenging, but wonderful music. We know they are not easy (as you can hear), but well worth the effort. What do you have on tap for 2022? https://youtu.be/3xPt5XnJEaU Doc, there is NOTHING crappy about you ...

Re: If you could buy a new tuba, would you?
I'd buy a new Miraphone 188. But, I'll soon be 86, and I can just see my daughters settling my estate, being told by some crook it's a POS not worth more than $400. I have a lot of faith in the essential goodness of most people, but there really are some crooks out there.
