Re: tuba ownership / emotional attachment
I have a thing for Conn 2XJ tubas...I don't know why, maybe I am totally crazy, but I just enjoy playing them. Everytime I sell one, I end up buying another :facepalm2:  No memories, emotional attachment, I just genuinely have fun playing these tubas. Ok, so the first step is complete, I ...

Re: New plan for a BBb. (purchased a 601 BBb)
I would be more than happy to share a list of BBb tubas that I think are easier to play, and produce better results. However, I'm not sure that would be very helpful to anyone. What plays easier/produces better results for me could be considerably different than what might work well for others. I ...

Re: New plan for a BBb. (purchased a 601 BBb)
Absolutely. It was a good playing tuba. Almost decided to keep it, but let it go to someone who could actually use it. For some weird reason, I really love old American tubas and all of their "qualities."

Re: New plan for a BBb. (purchased a 601 BBb)
I'm definitely not an expert, but I have mostly played/performed on BBb tubas for most of my 20+ year career in the military. I have also, thanks to the military, had the opportunity to play/perform on nearly all of the most popular/latest models of BBb tubas over the years. I have personally owned ...

Yes, Symphonia Domestica, such a fun piece of music. I've never played it, but I really enjoy listening to it, especially the Fritz Reiner CSO recording.

Re: Narrowing down mouthpieces
For a low cost option, maybe try the Kelly 50, 18, and/or 24AW(this is an updated 24AW design with a modern rim profile, and inner diameter). I like all of the lexan versions of these, and I just purchased a stainless steel 24AW for fancy occasions. Fwiw, I used to use a 3/4 BBb for quintet playing ...

Re: Rant on musicality
Would you say that Roger Bobo exhibited the same level of nuance/ finesse/musicianship/phrasing as Rostropovich, YoYoMa, or any of the great tenors? Why are tuba solos, at least the ones that seem to stick around, written primarily in what's considered a baritone/tenor range, with the occasional dip ...

Re: Rant on musicality
I'm not convinced that nuanced musicality isn't taught. I think that it has more to do with the ability/attention to detail to convey the nuanced musicality through the ever growing size of our instruments.

Re: Rant on musicality
Roger Bobo is truly one of a kind. Just an unbelievable "musician." However, I think that many great tuba players/musicians/soloists have emerged since Roger Bobo. Some of favorites are: Øystein Baadsvik, Roland Szentpáli, Patrick Sheridan, Carol Jantsch, James Gourlay, Aaron Tindal, Les Neish, ...

Re: Wessex XL Test videos
I apologize for the audio quality. It was recorded with my cell phone, so probably not the best representation of the sound. I don't think that it's a true Kaiser sound. It's kind of a blend between the Kaiser and American sound, but leans more towards the American sound. I bought this as kind of an ...

The only people I have run into that care about the direction my tuba bell faces are other tuba players And I have done the orchestra thing on more than a few occasions

Re: Had a Good Run at Blue Bells of Scotland Tonight, But…
I'm really sorry that you're recording equipment failed. I have experienced this problem with my Q2N. I purchased an external hard drive and external power bank, and that fixed the problem... mostly. I don't really use it anymore because it's more of a hassle than just using my phone. If I want ...

Re: POLL !! - XCVIII
Congratulations on the new tuba! I will probably never get to hear one live, so I can only imagine. Couple of questions: It’s light given its size - so made from sheet brass? Why do you like the Fafner piston model but didn’t like the rotary version yet you like the 98 with rotors? I have played/per ...

It's something  I have no words  :facepalm2: I have been playing tuba for a living for over 20 years, and I haven't used a CC tuba for anything. I have performed/worked with plenty of people who use CC tubas. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. Whatever tool helps you ...
