Re: Estimate on the age of a handmade pt-6

There is a serial number list for B and S in that era that's pretty comprehensive. I think Robert Tucci and Berlinertuba either have a copy or know the person who does, they both post occasionally and are quite nice and helpful. I will warn you that sometimes the parts got switched around. An anecdo...

Re: That B&M...

It really does have a crazy good low register. It's a really nice tuba for the lower octave/bass foundation kind of a role. Super intuitive and even response down in the basement, no weird notes at all. I've always thought it was strange that the Besson 995/Nirschl 4/4's, which have some common desi...

Re: regardless of monetary value or quantity of instruments, tuba-wise, do you currently own exactly what you wish to ow

Nope! I own the exact basstuba I'd like to, but I'd probably own a different contrabass tuba, a Rudy 3/4 instead of the Kalison DS I currently play. The Kalison is easy to steer intonation and response wise, is right sized for the group I play in today, and the price was right, but I miss the clarit...

I'm not in the market (I have a similar F that I love), but I just have to say, these look so damn good in silver.

Price drop bump! Make me an offer! This will be consigned if this goes on much longer, but I'd like to avoid the drive!

Re: B&S Symphonie on Facebook Marketplace

Just a few months It sure did look tempting to me. Good thing I already have one. I had the same thought. Just a few months ago I flew to the same part of the country to buy one. I played Die Miestersinger Overture with my community orchestra yesterday, and I have to say, I don't regret the purchase!

Cool that it was your old horn @martyneilan, and thanks for the natural bump!

I just took a look and the mouthpipe is labeled "L" so it looks like the larger pipe is the one that is included.

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

More, in what sense - more hideous, or more impossible to fix? Fixing this was described to me as risky. Dana said that the approach he'd use to make an attempt as something like "first anneal to soften the metal, then slowly unfold each layer" but said that often, even under annealing, t...

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

It's hard to photograph well as the easiest way to describe this is texture, but Bloke's diagnosis is correct. The horn had been damaged in a car accident, and the bell was pretty misshapen. One "axis" of damage was the standard folds/waves that a good repairman (in this case Dana Hofer) w...

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

Question though, if you never intend to remove the valve section, why not just get it soldered in place like every other tuba? I thought about this, but figured that it makes the most sense to start with the simplest and solution (tight screws and loctite) and, if that was insufficient to stop anno...

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

If a bell turns up I'd be interested, as somehow all the mechanical parts were spared in the crash, compression and alignment are great, etc, and it plays well enough in tune to be worth it. However, given the company no longer exists and not a ton of these were made, I'm not hopeful that anyone has...

Kalison DS Characteristics

I recently purchased a Kalison DS. These are oddball enough that I thought it'd be worth posting about the playing characteristics. This one had a somewhat mangled bell (car accident), including some compound folds, where the metal is kind of folded over itself. The horn hadn't been played in about ...

Re: RIP Peter Schickele

I'm surprised at no mention of The Only Piece Ever Written for Violin and Tuba (which I don't think is the only piece ever written for violin and tuba anymore) I played this one with a violinist friend on her recital as her "take a breather" piece. It went over well with the audience, I t...

Given the number of jobs won on them, I think the rotor PT6 might be the objective "biggest winner"

Re: RIP Peter Schickele

He wrote some nice light-hearted stuff for tuba! I'll always have fond memories of one playing one of his earlier pieces with my wife before we got hitched. It was pre PDQ Bach, a duet for clarinet and tuba called Little Suite for Winter. It was really a sweet little piece, used both instruments to ...

Re: "stuffy"

I tend to interpret stuffy as "hard to make resonate with the input you're giving it." One confounding factor here is that, at least in my experience, the instruments tuba players find the stuffiest (smaller basstubas) are a lot more sensitive to poor maintenance (particularly valve alignm...
