Re: Flying tubas

I've done it a half dozen times, and had no trouble. Most airlines require you to be against a bulkhead (either all the way at the front or back of the plane) with the tuba in a window seat.

I've had the easiest time flying Southwest. I get there early, and announce myself to the gate agent as soon ...

Visit to Lee Stofer's Shop

I was at Lee Stofer's shop in Iowa recently to try and ultimately purchase a Czech made C tuba he had in stock. Lee was a gracious host, and while doing some work on it (adding spit valves) he invited me to try a couple of the tubas he had in the shop. They were interesting enough to warrant a few ...

Re: Are you using your F tuba to play anything other than gypsy violin solos these days?

I will say, as an amateur in a pretty good community orchestra, I find myself picking my F tuba more than most American pros would. I'm probably 60/40 C vs F, for 2 main reasons:

1) Most amateur brass sections, especially the higher brass, cannot produce the volumes that that professionals can ...

I have no affiliation or knowledge of the specific seller or horn, but there's been a 45 slp on eBay at a reasonable price for quite a while. Happy hunting!

Re: Mouthpiece for Rudy 3/4 CC

I miss my Rudy! It was the same era and dynamite condition, I regret selling it, though I'm sure the military band guy I sold it to put it to good use.

Mine was not picky on mouthpieces in terms of "not agreeing" with different shanks and cup sizes, it played pretty well with a wide variety ...

Re: Storing bell-front tubas

I really like wall mounting tubas, keeps them accessible but not underfoot. In interior finished rooms, I like the look of the string swing tuba mount, though it's a bit pricey and doesn't fit every tuba. For a basement, I'd do the diy cheap hooks + pipe insulation approach suggested by gocsick ...

Re: Estimate on the age of a handmade pt-6

There is a serial number list for B and S in that era that's pretty comprehensive. I think Robert Tucci and Berlinertuba either have a copy or know the person who does, they both post occasionally and are quite nice and helpful.

I will warn you that sometimes the parts got switched around. An ...

Re: That B&M...

It really does have a crazy good low register. It's a really nice tuba for the lower octave/bass foundation kind of a role. Super intuitive and even response down in the basement, no weird notes at all.

I've always thought it was strange that the Besson 995/Nirschl 4/4's, which have some common ...

Re: regardless of monetary value or quantity of instruments, tuba-wise, do you currently own exactly what you wish to ow

Nope!

I own the exact basstuba I'd like to, but I'd probably own a different contrabass tuba, a Rudy 3/4 instead of the Kalison DS I currently play. The Kalison is easy to steer intonation and response wise, is right sized for the group I play in today, and the price was right, but I miss the ...

I'm not in the market (I have a similar F that I love), but I just have to say, these look so damn good in silver.

Price drop bump! Make me an offer! This will be consigned if this goes on much longer, but I'd like to avoid the drive!

Re: B&S Symphonie on Facebook Marketplace

Just a few months
It sure did look tempting to me. Good thing I already have one.

I had the same thought. Just a few months ago I flew to the same part of the country to buy one. I played Die Miestersinger Overture with my community orchestra yesterday, and I have to say, I don't regret the ...

Cool that it was your old horn @martyneilan, and thanks for the natural bump!

I just took a look and the mouthpipe is labeled "L" so it looks like the larger pipe is the one that is included.

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

More, in what sense - more hideous, or more impossible to fix?

Fixing this was described to me as risky. Dana said that the approach he'd use to make an attempt as something like "first anneal to soften the metal, then slowly unfold each layer" but said that often, even under annealing, this ...

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

It's hard to photograph well as the easiest way to describe this is texture, but Bloke's diagnosis is correct.

The horn had been damaged in a car accident, and the bell was pretty misshapen.

One "axis" of damage was the standard folds/waves that a good repairman (in this case Dana Hofer) was able ...

Re: Kalison DS Characteristics

Question though, if you never intend to remove the valve section, why not just get it soldered in place like every other tuba?

I thought about this, but figured that it makes the most sense to start with the simplest and solution (tight screws and loctite) and, if that was insufficient to stop ...
