Re: Tweaking instrument production with software

bloke , the open source software definitely makes a constant temperature assumption. My training is in a different kind of mathematics, but taking a glance at how the math/software works, extending it to account for different temperatures at different parts of the tube wouldn't be too hard, could ...

Re: Tweaking instrument production with software

There's also an open source instrument design software for Python available, developed out of a lab in France, called openwind. It doesn't have the cool hardware that BIAS has or even a UI, definitely less approachable, but does have the ability to predict intonation characteristics given a geometry ...

Re: Identify B&S CC

This is a funny one! It looks like either a PT3 or Symphonie 3/4 C tuba.

The Symphonie 3/4 C tuba almost always has a kranz, and has the F tuba / Symphonie valveset, which is conical (17-21mm) bore and has the 5th and 1st valves separated just like the Symphonie F tuba.
PT3s usually have no kranz ...

B and S 3106?

An oddity popped up on eBay, listed as a B and S 3106. Is anyone familiar with this model? I've never seen one like this!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/306789953073

It has some odd characteristics for a B and S, 45 degree exit from the valveset, straight approach at the top, and a very long leadpipe ...

Re: Cerveny 686 Fourth Slide Lengthening Advice

Thanks to all for your advice! The third slide is the same length as the fourth, so switching doesn't help. I'll be going with the folded slide.

Cerveny 686 Fourth Slide Lengthening Advice

I have a 90s Cerveny 686 C tuba (Sanders is the stencil name) that is a great player, but unfortunately has a pitifully short fourth slide, equivalent to 1+3 with the first slide pushed almost all the way in. It needs about 4 inches more total of length to be in tune, so something like 2 inches more ...

Re: Who rebuilds rotary valves?

I think I might have bid against you for that Weltklang 104! I remember hearing that Dan Oberloh is set up to do this as well, but a rebuild is unlikely to save you much money.

I had 2 leaky valves on my Symphonie, and after conversations with multiple instrument repair folks, went with replacement ...

Re: B&S 3100

I had some time in the elephant room at Midwest with one of these about 5 years back. It was the my favorite f tuba I played all day there, and it wasn't particularly close. I remember playing a couple of miraphones, the Wessex, JP, and Eastman rotary B and S copies, and the Wilson compact piston ...

B and S Symphonie Valve Replacement Project Diary

A detailed writeup is below, but TLDR, if the rotors of a good tuba are worn, having a skilled repairman replace the valves is absolutely worth the investment. Recent changes in tariff policy add a small to moderate complication to trying to repeat this project again in the near future.

A few years ...

Re: F for less than that price of my kidneys

Congratulations on the new axe! A nice F tuba feels like jumping into a Miata after years of driving a Suburban. I remember being shocked at how easy stuff like Kopprasch or Rochut was to execute on mine.

From personal experience, rotary F tubas often don't respond great with funnelish mouthpieces ...

Re: F for less than that price of my kidneys

To drag this back on topic, if you're looking under 5k for an F tuba, even the higher quality Chinese made instruments like Eastman or JP are usually out of reach (occasionally one might pop up used barely under the 5k mark).

I can't think of any options outside of Jinbao/Mackbrass/Wessex copies ...

Re: Flying tubas

I've done it a half dozen times, and had no trouble. Most airlines require you to be against a bulkhead (either all the way at the front or back of the plane) with the tuba in a window seat.

I've had the easiest time flying Southwest. I get there early, and announce myself to the gate agent as soon ...

Visit to Lee Stofer's Shop

I was at Lee Stofer's shop in Iowa recently to try and ultimately purchase a Czech made C tuba he had in stock. Lee was a gracious host, and while doing some work on it (adding spit valves) he invited me to try a couple of the tubas he had in the shop. They were interesting enough to warrant a few ...

I have no affiliation or knowledge of the specific seller or horn, but there's been a 45 slp on eBay at a reasonable price for quite a while. Happy hunting!

Re: Mouthpiece for Rudy 3/4 CC

I miss my Rudy! It was the same era and dynamite condition, I regret selling it, though I'm sure the military band guy I sold it to put it to good use.

Mine was not picky on mouthpieces in terms of "not agreeing" with different shanks and cup sizes, it played pretty well with a wide variety ...

Re: Storing bell-front tubas

I really like wall mounting tubas, keeps them accessible but not underfoot. In interior finished rooms, I like the look of the string swing tuba mount, though it's a bit pricey and doesn't fit every tuba. For a basement, I'd do the diy cheap hooks + pipe insulation approach suggested by gocsick ...

Re: Estimate on the age of a handmade pt-6

There is a serial number list for B and S in that era that's pretty comprehensive. I think Robert Tucci and Berlinertuba either have a copy or know the person who does, they both post occasionally and are quite nice and helpful.

I will warn you that sometimes the parts got switched around. An ...
