Re: puzzled over musical expression marking

I'd bet it means "heavy" something or other. Aside from the fact that it's on a tuba part, "peso" means weight (or "cheap date" in Mexicoland).

Alternatively, Ai says:
Based on a search of Indonesian, regional dialects, and common slang, "pesotum tolono" does not appear to be a recognized phrase in ...

Re: Where to Study the Tuba?

Having gone to music school, played military band, and then having a non-musical career, I would encourage you to look for a teacher and a program that teaches something in addition to classical tuba. Of all the gigs I've had as a pro and as an amateur, most of the money has come from non-classical ...

Valve racket

I have an Olds O99, 3 banger, sort of new to me. I'm a bone player, so no discernable valve skills. I find the valves can be a little loud. Do I just learn how to not mash the valves, or is there some felt or neoprene or urethane donuts I can put in there so I sound less like I have my own ...

FS: King 3b+f 2125 trombone

If you or someone you know is interested in a trombone, this might be useful. King 3b+f 2125. 0.525" medium bore, rose bell, f attachment, bright tenor-y sound, nice player. Ugly lacquer, beautiful sound.

Located in western Virginia, $1000 shipped in the US. Or come pick it up, it's nice here ...

Re: CC and F tubas and high school players... an observation from a parent

It has been that way since I was in school (40+ years ago) . On trombone they push all kids to 547 bore with a valve. The assumption with academics is that you're working toward playing in an orchestra even though that's the least likely outcome of going to music school.

He can buck the system, and ...

Re: Opinions on Raw Brass

Some silver plated instruments are in turn lacquered, and never lose that shine. Raw silver plate has to be polished, and also can discolor your white shirts. You can find chrome or nickel plated pieces, more common I think on smaller instruments.

One time I actually sold a horn because it looked ...

Re: Opinions on Raw Brass

I think it effects the response of the horn slightly. Maybe very slightly. It responds just a little faster. If the lacquer job was really bad, it might make a bigger improvement.

It will, however, have a more noticeable effect on the resale value. I've got a horn that plays great but with funky ...

Re: Bambino in quintet?

I personally think it's too small. I used to own a Bambino and play a lot of quintet (tenor bone). Eb is fine, but a bigger one carries the group better without being too loud. There may be certain tunes with certain other players that will make it work, but in general, that's too small a sound.

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

Bass trombone is a trombone, and it's just a big fat B-flat trombone that doesn't play high as easily/clearly and plays low more easily/clearly (just like a big fat tuba versus a skinny tuba), and even its primary auxiliary valve is the same as is found on tenor trombones.

That's a super ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

Mine is pitched in F, and some trombone players turn the nose up at it, even though it's a true BASS trombone (but again, I suspect it's because I'm playing gigs that they think should go to B-flat bass trombone players, and friends of mine who play tenor, bass, tuba, and euphonium laugh, and tell ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

I prefer sitting in a orchestra section with someone with an old Conn bass trombone and maybe a mouthpiece no larger than a Schilke 59, as those (assuming a musical player) actually sound like musical instruments to me.

I don't get to play orchestra much, but when I do it's on 1st parts.

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

Two more things to add:

Rare is it when you find a bass bone player who uses lip slurs, and doesn't think every articulation is a big hat accent. It's just too hard to use your air efficiently on a bass bone to do more than one or two lip slurs in a row, and it's just too tempting to slam every ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

There's bass trombone, and then there's bass trombone. It's easy for a tenor player to blow a couple Ds or Ebs and sound good. Real bass bone players can get around all the way down. I can't do that easily, and I don't know any other tenor players who have really mastered the bass. It takes serious ...

Re: Zoom hand held recorder for tuba

Sounds like it's more dynamic, which can hurt musical performances with dynamics, as well as change the balance as things go. Was the cartridge aimed at the trombone? Because it seems to have the most presence. The tuba volume seems to lower as soon as the rest of the ensemble comes in.

I don't ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

I used to think that too. And truth be known, my main axe is tenor. I didn't start playing bass until about 12 years ago. Bass bone is a different animal. Here's why:

1) function. Tenor plays mainly harmonic lines, but does get a few melodic lines from time to time. Bass gets a lot of roots. Oom ...

Re: Zoom hand held recorder for tuba

Yeah, the float is the part that really makes this thing super easy to use without having a lot of prior experience with the device and without a lot of pre-checks or post-processing. I've never had to adjust levels in post for recordings from this device.

Here's a link to a portion of a raw ...
