Re: Rubank Advanced books - nothing to sneeze at (after wiping them off)

One of the advantages of age is that you can be surprised by things you probably once knew, but forgot, and forgot that you ever knew. I have owned the Rubank Advanced books and the Wekselblatt Solos for the Tuba Player books for over 40 years, but just recently "noticed" that the Magic Fl...

Re: it was meant as a compliment, i'm sure but....

I alternate practice days between my euphonium and small Eb tuba. My wife tells me she usually can't tell which one I'm playing. When I ask how it sounded, she almost always says, "I wasn't really listening."

Re: POLL!!! - plastic tubas

I think one of the main problems with these instruments was in their first impressions. They were introduced in these garish colors that made them look like they weren't supposed to be taken seriously. Recently I have seen them in chrome-paint "silver." A vast improvement--it doesn't look ...

Handmade Custom Tuba Stand

After spending a considerable amount of time cogitating on method, materials, design, etc., I came up with this do-it-yourself product: tuba stand (2).jpg The customization possibilities are endless! Different bin colors are available at your local Walmart Emporium. Coordinating/contrasting colors o...

Re: Looking for serial number

One of the issues of getting an instrument that is over a century old, is that it likely comes with a checkered history of "repairs." Probably long after the original owner was no longer using the horn regularly, someone performed the abomination referred to as Fig. 1. Leadpipe abomination...

Re: Please school- mouthpieces and high range

About 3 years ago, I sold my BBb Miraphone and bought a euphonium. I played the euph exclusively for about 2 years, and then I had occasion to borrow a Meinl BBb tuba for a gig. After 2 years of euphonium work, my upper range on the Meinl was freaky high. I literally could play the Bb an octave abov...

Re: POLL: My fairly-new-to-me euphonium...You guys tell me all about it.

Nice. Looks a lot like mine. Completely different model, but even so, looks a lot like mine. Three valves on top, one sticking out at an angle on the side, leadpipe for mouthpiece insertion, etc. That is one of the things that fascinates me about this instrument genre, compared to tuba. One key, the...

Re: I’m so old, that…

. . . I can't be the reincarnation of a dead French Impressionist. When, as a teenager, I first discovered the work of the artist Henri Matisse, I became completely enthralled with his work. So much so, that I fantasized that I was him, reborn. That fantasy was dashed when I learned that our lives o...

Re: If you could buy a new tuba, would you?

Yes. Not for the sake of new, per se, but for practical considerations. I would love to have a Wessex Bombino, but I don't remember ever seeing a used one offered. Maybe in a few years when Wessex rolls out the Bombinissimo*, the devotees will want to unload their older equipment. * (Artist's concep...

Re: What’s on Your Stand for 2022? (Warning: crappy Bach content ahead)

I bought an Eb tuba a few months ago, and after taxing my elderly brain alternating between it and my euphonium, I decided to dig into my cornet roots and start playing euphonium in treble clef. One of my online mentors has said that treble is a natural fit for euphonium scoring, and pairs nicely wi...

One other odd thing about the tuba: On the bottom bow, we have this: tuba fin 2.jpg I understand the need for reinforcing the bow, but this thing is painful. If I were to actually set the tuba in front of me, on the portion of chair that remains after I take most of it, the mouthpiece is near the ba...

Looking for serial number

I recently acquired a museum piece. (Well, if you include the stuff in the museum storage room that is awaiting possible restoration to make it fit for the display floor.) It is a Carl Fischer Eb, of unknown age. Based on its provenance, it is at least a hundred years old, but I don't know. I have s...

I'm 67. I know and very much like this song.

More than just being good, this music was the soundtrack of the parents of my generation. For me, it conjures up a Boomer version of hearth and home.

Re: WTB: Inexpensive 3 valve Eb

Plays decently for its age. My main objective was to see if Eb was a fit for me, and if learning new fingerings was going to be too much of a challenge. So far, so good. I am trying that I-am-a-euphonium player-but-I-double-on-Eb thing. An unexpected challenge was the mouthpiece issue. Horns of that...

FWIW: I recently bought a very elderly Eb from a seller in my city. I found her on ebay, but I was able to examine the tuba before buying it. Old, but playable, 'nuff said. She took down the ebay listing that day. BUT, there are probably a dozen "sellers" online, displaying pictures of my ...

Re: Slide Lubricants

I just bought a very old tuba from a non-musician, who had the tuba serviced prior to selling. When she told me which shop she used, I sort of imploded. The shop in question is a shlock store with a sketchy repair section. Anyway, I thoroughly cleaned the horn when I got it home. I eventually got th...

Re: WTB: Inexpensive 3 valve Eb

I sent a message to the seller asking for clarification, because the ebay listing calls it a Bb baritone. I guess I'll find out. I get the impression that this seller deals in antiques and collectables, and might not know what it actually is.
