Re: cool vintage Holton rec. bell BBb $600 (Pontiac, MI/FB)

They have used a sousaphone-style third valve wrap, which enables the low-slung valve section, which in turn enables a long straight run of leadpipe (which I suspect has something to do with the easy blow and sweet voice). Also lowers the center of gravity, making for nice balance on the lap.

Re: cool vintage Holton rec. bell BBb $600 (Pontiac, MI/FB)

Hi Arpthark,

This Holton "Standard" is 29" from floor to top of top bow. Width is 16" from left side of big end of bottom bow to right side of small end of same (i.e., widest width of bottom bow at the ferrules). The horn is about the same size as a York 33. Smallish compared to my two large tubas ...

Re: cool vintage Holton rec. bell BBb $600 (Pontiac, MI/FB)

I own one of these -- made in 1929. Has a York 33 bell. (I still have the original bell and throat.) A very sweet instrument that was my brass quintet horn for a long time.

Just look at that right-angle bend in the first valve tubing. Arpthark, I'll see your $199 and raise you to $299.

Well it's not a new York. That would be on the East coast.

Re: Lee Stofer used instruments

I own a 1935 26J/27J. In fact, I owned two of them at the same time for quite a while. As to playing characteristics, they were remarkably consistent with each other (as Lewis Carroll would say, they were "much of a muchness").

Lee Stofer's text describes my own experience with this model. I would ...

Re: Facebook: Silver Miraphone 184 CC

Is this person dreaming, or can this be sold for that amount of money? Who knows what the intonation characteristics are.

I feel like this is the second time I’ve seen this one on the market for a similar amount of money, so at least one person bought it for that amount.

Possibly it did ...

Hello All,

Have been receiving ever fewer new emails regarding this posting, possibly because the holiday season is upon us. I am about to proceed with the sale. If you would like to play-test this instrument, suggest you don't wait any longer before reaching out.

Happy holidays to all!

Re: 1960’s Hirsbrunner BBb Model HBS193

Answers to recent questions:

(1) The valves are like new. The axles are perfect.
(2) The valve stops ("bumpers") were replaced in 2020. At present these show no signs of wear, no indentations, and they remain pliable (using the "fingernail test").
(3) I installed nylon washers under the valve caps ...

Love the layout of your F. In particular, the position of the valve buttons for 5 and 6 are "thinking out of the box". My compliments.

Oh, ye of little faith. Don't judge the book by its cover. Etc etc.

Looks to be worthy of restoration. That purple patina is lovely. (I have a Holton Eb that is going in that direction. Also a Harvey Hartman York helicon with Conn short-action valves with the same color bell. ) A little work on the ...

Re: 1960’s Hirsbrunner BBb Model HBS193

There have been several inquiries about the mouthpiece receiver on this HBS193. The bottom line -- the receiver accepts both American and Euro mouthpieces.

I regularly use a G&W Taku Euro with this horn. This is a "Euro" size mpc whose small end diameter is approx 0.540". The mpc enters the ...
