How about using the designations that the sports teams use.... Tim-bits band (for the really little kids) hahaha Midget band Junior varsity (JV) band Varsity band 😂🤣😂 Actually at my HS the top band was the Concert Band and the kids that didn’t make that were in the Varsity Band. Plus there were 2 fr ...

Re: lap tuning slides
Many, many years ago, I used automobile finish rubbing compound to lap some slides. It worked nicely. You have to be able to judge when to stop, wash everything out, and see what you have. You either stop at that point or go again. What method do you use and why? TJ I've tried coarse and fine ...

Re: Carrying power
I'm doing a video game orchestra concert tonight. Man those things are dumb, but they sell a lot of tickets. I'm using the Holton instrument. It's just about identical to a four quarter York - for those who know what those are like. The fact that it's not six quarter offers a whole bunch of punch ...

Re: Transposing question kinda?
Take a look at the Poulenc Oboe Sonata.  yes...The scherzo is a "booger", but (ignoring the technical, and sorry, but) it really requires a bit more musical subtleties and phrasing ability than (100?)% of tuba players possess. Yes, it COULD (someday, perhaps...) be an ...

What's the yellow bag for? I bet it contains the lead pipe. I’ve got a Conn of that vintage and the lead pipe is very long and flat. You rarely see them nowadays - suspect they were easy to lose. It’s easier to store as well as transit in the car with it separate. With a huge collection like they ha ...

Are you - possibly - mixing "Quincy", "Barnaby Jones", and "Quincy Jones" together into some hurricane-like mixed drink? Possibly…. :red:  That guy had such an amazing career. Spanning so many different types of music and he was able to do it over such a long time span - his stuff was always ...

Re: American in Paris (et al) - first rehearsal
With a work like the Gershwin I find it to be an interesting mental exercise to try and imagine what Gershwin heard in his head when he wrote the part, and then to try and emulate that sound. Was the piece initially performed by Geib or Vanni (who played F tuba almost exclusively) in 1928? I ...

I never met him in person, but he used to occasionally post on that other forum years ago. What an amazing life - effectively performing at a high level in 2 very different disciplines. He always struck me as both a good guy and a nice guy.

I found these lyrics. Does anyone have access to the melody to this verse? ...and TWO verse stanzas, of all things  His name was Yuba, He was homely, he was dumb. And so was Yuba Just a big ambitious bum, He wouldn't do-a So much as chew a piece of gum So this is news to me. I understand-a ...

Re: Seeing as how this is being offered out of Nashville...
At 27 inches in length looks like a euph case instead of a tuba case as they listed it. Looks like they mainly deal in bicycle parts with a few oddball things thrown in such as this gem one could buy to protect the old noggin on the walk into that late night gig in a rough part of town. :bugeyes ...

If my group was premiering this piece and you the composer were there I would find you afterwards and beat you with said drumstick. Seriously - you will want to make sure your health insurance is paid up and covers ER visits. :smilie6: If you’re after a cymbal type sound effect that won’t be the eff ...

Re: Your thoughts on a Miraphone 186-4U BBb tuba
Sierra Cosworth = Mercury Merkur in the U.S. I did drive the Ford/Mercury Cougar against each other. Ford was a 2.0L and the Mercury a 2.5L V6 and guess what the Ford was quicker on the test track because of the super soft suspension of the Mercury. Ahh, cultural differences. The Mercury Merkur was ...

The suspension was also Yamaha, and I'm thinking the entire Powertrain. There are a whole bunch of parts on the body and other parts that look like regular Taurus parts but they were actually only specific to that model. ...and no I'm not saying that those parts were made by Yamaha. I think it ...

Re: Cronkhite or Messina?
I own Cronkhite bags. I don’t own Messina, but I’ve seen several and did consider them for my last bag. I believe you will get a better fit with Cronkhite. I believe it is a better made bag, but the Messina is constructed pretty well. I believe the Cronkhite is a better level of material and the att ...

Re: F@tB@stard (Miraphone 98) on sabbatical
People who have tubas on “sabbatical…” hmm... I’ve heard of them… Aren’t they called “collectors?” Somewhat guilty here! “Poking the bloke!” As i understand it, a sabbatical is usually granted for doing concentrated work so important you can't be distracted by normal day to day work. Professors take ...

Well if it’s the one Lee S. is selling for $4650 the OP forgot to mention that price also includes a Reunion Blues gig bag - those by themselves these days go for $600. That horn looks to be in terrific shape. I will also say to the OP if we are talking about the above seller and horn I’ve done a lot ...

It’s a shame all that great locally produced tv is just a thing of the past. Our local version of Sivad was/is Svengoolie and it’s been around a long time. Sadly pretty much the last of all the great local and locally produced tv shows for kids. Chicagoland had scores of local tv just aimed at kids a ...

is that thing painted brass, fiber glass or carbon fiber? I couldn’t tell on my small screen. I did learn the tuba player is also the tubist in the Munich State Opera, the German Bra ...

Re: Never used
Ya know you may be right about it being picked up played and sat back down. Back in the 1960’s when I was a kid just taking up the tuba my mom and I were in one of the great local old time hardware stores. It dated back to the 1890’s and still run by one of the family descendants of the founder. It w ...
