Re: Ann Arbor: Newer Style King 2341
You have to wonder with that far so below market price if this one had poor slide alignment or valve issues which some of these suffer from. I didn’t see any in depth description of the horn. You’d assume a Music Store wouldn’t sell at such a low price to current market value just to turn it ...

Do the work...
Bloke’s post about the current state of his old HS band got me thinking to post this as to how a good HS band director can have such a huge impact on kids including the ones not going on in music. The tuba is involved in the story and not in the way you might imagine. Jason Benetti grew up in my ...

I don’t know if it’s still there, but there was a great pizza place in Caledonia (at least back 23 years or so). Excellent thin crust (or what some call tavern style) pizza. They made their own sausage. Back in my Mergers & Acquisitions days I spent a couple months just around the corner ...

Re: I don't like teaching private/studio lessons, and have not for decades...
No parent would go along with the economic arithmetic of this. The nominal rate in your scenario is instructor charges $50/hr for a private lesson per individual. For a discount of 20% off the individual charge of $50 their child is thrown into a master class aka (group lesson) with 11 other ...

Re: Conn-Selmer to shut down Eastlake
Seemingly yet more jobs being taken from workers in the USA and given to folk in the far east where wages are real cheap. It might be a hard headed business decision or it might be a case of maximising profits with no thought for anything else … you decide. I do buy goods made in China, but what I ...

It’s pretty cool in person.
It is definitely much more impressive in person. I saw it as a kid up at Interlochen. Impressive engraving work & the biggest Sousaphone I had ever seen. I remember thinking -geez gotta be a giant PITA to march in a 2 mile parade with it on your shoulder! :bugeyes ...

Re: Maybe I’m late to the party on this hack
Most people don't have a buffing machine - and not even a small one, but for those of us who do, it polishes silver plating quite quickly and for less expense and trouble than using up salt, baking soda and foil, as well as using up some gas or electricity to heat up water to boiling, but I ...

Re: Bambino in quintet?
Did the Great Bambino ever play in a Quintet? I don’t know, but he did play tuba in the band at St. Mary’s Orphange in Baltimore when he was a kid. Here he is with his alma mater St Mary’s band raising money to rebuild the school after a fire.

Re: Getting Older
Sounds like you have a small horn already in the Yamaha 103. The Lidl 701 mentioned in this thread is really just a bigger sound, much nicer build quality, rotary valves (excellent valves btw), bigger bell (16”) well made version of that horn. I had one - it’s a nice horn - but if you’re looking for ...

Re: This darn strap and my 981.
While Bloke has the ability to solder on (or move) strap rings, if you don't you might try two of these (you may need a larger size, but you get the idea) to move around until you get them in the best spots. Then you could have strap rings soldered on there, or leave the velcro straps on.

All I know is she wants to use a strap-on with a harness & it also some how involves a tuba.
Seems like a question more suited to that other forum or is that a low blow...

Re: Mirafone fantasy
Hey Mike,
Mark--Interesting to know you bought your Mirafone from Bill also.
And I took lessons from Richard Frazier.
I bought my 186 BBb in 1966 (with some assistance). Then, the tuba was $650.00, and the hard case was $90 .
I just bought a new Miraphone case from Thomann to replace ...

Re: Mirafone fantasy
I tried to identify anyone at Mirafone USA that would have been located in Whittier during the Sun Valley years, but could not. Mirafone USA was founded by Howard Lockie, who was the owner of Lockie's Music in Los Angeles. He had partnered at some point with Roy J. Maier, who was a saxophonist and ...

Re: Desperate need to rent/borrow tubas in Hawai'i
Wouldn’t the best route be to contact all the local HS in the area they are going to and see if they could borrow tubas/sousaphones? Seems like one HS would be willing to loan to another HS. Plus make them an offer to do the same reciprocal thing should one of the local HS visit their area. Perhaps ...

My very first exposure to Mirafone was in early spring 1974 as a HS sophomore when my Chicago area HS band spent Spring Break doing a series of concerts in Southern California. San Diego, Whittier, Costa Mesa, Whittier, Long Beach, Santa Monica, San Diego, LA and a couple other places I can’t ...

Re: Kanstul 66S
It's one of those tubas whereby a top action valve block has knuckles twisted around so that it is repurposed as a front action... a whole lot like the Yamaha 621 tubas.
If I recall (and it has been years) I seem to recollect this horn was based on the York Model 33 with upright valves - but ...
