Re: Returning Player Advice
Here's a blunt suggestion which is only meant as a sincere helpful suggestion: If you actually do have a mustache, I would encourage you to either choose the mustache or choose tuba playing. People will read my post here and argue against it and contradict it. Whatever. :eyes: Perhahpsh he'sh one o...

Re: What am I missing here?
I can’t imagine paying more than a few thousand for a sousaphone. I mean, if it’s your main gigging instrument, I guess, go for it, but $6500? Absolutely not. I met a friend for lunch at a dumpy, concrete-block dive last week - un-paved parking lot, bus your own picnic table kind of place. Tasty fo...

Re: What am I missing here?
I own an O-97, and during the worst of the nearby wildfires, when we prepped for a short-notice 'climb out of bed and evac', we lined up our go-bags, then queued up our 'if there's time & space' amenities in priority order. The first of my instruments was one that I'd paid the least for: the O-9...

I have something like this that I got at Costco. It collapses and is easy to transport. I used it with the 283 in the Protec bag, and the 283 is pretty tall. Held it on with a cargo strap. Worked just fine for me, pull it along like a hand truck. Weird, link won't print. Search for "folding ha...

Re: CHEAP headphones for listening to tuba on phone/laptop
I bought Audio Technica ATH-M50x earcups for 3 of my kids (4th wanted ear buds), because I found a super clearance deal. I borrowed a pair to listen to a Hovhaness symphony CD - probably 50 St. Helens or 22 City of Light - and was astounded to catch the sound of a musician flipping a page; had never...

THIS THREAD LOOKS LIKE A BIG AD FOR JP. -------------------------------------------------- The point that I'm trying to make (more than carnival-barking my brand) is that - often - government employees are often a bit too careless and self-important spending money that is not their personal money. ...

#3 child has my BigLabel baritone, and we had an upcoming June gig that precipitated a replacement safari. My employer provides a "lifestyle wellbeing" expense account, so after briefly scouring the used market, I took a flyer on the BigLabel clone. FAR better player than my real-deal vers...

Re: Andy Griffith’s tuba
. . .there was a big folk music thing going on in the early sixties, that almost became more popular than rock and roll. I could list many examples of some of those musicians, but this post is already too long. I recall a very popular show - black and white, of course - which featured folk music su...

Re: Plastic tubas...?
Gal in community band had one. It looked remarkably similar to my King 2341, only bright red. She let me try it: comically, delightfully light, and surprisingly well-playing. Intonation was workable, tone was great - doubt if anyone in the band would've paid it any mind other than for the red glow. ...

Yeah, maybe like this with spacer blocks behind the hanger to get it off the wall, and behind the bottom bow (with padding) to hang it straight?
I'm Yankee Cheap. That's what I'd probably do. $16.00+tx off Amazon

I think this is an Olds O97(?), the "junior sousaphone", and I've got one (although maybe not - I thought mine was closer to 14 pounds). 20" bell, super light, great-playing horn, with an accessible 1st slide and great valves. It balances well with a small ensemble (e.g. Christmas car...

Thank you, Bloke, I intend to share your insights & advice with my kids to (at their discretion) in turn share with their peers, a number of whom are pursuing undergraduate & postgraduate degrees in music. I played a two-set gig that included a very skilled (and young - I'd guess early twent...

Those miles of houses that I refer to were - many MANY years ago - empty beach. The dairy farmers considered the land close to the Lake to be worthless, due to their being so much sand in it and - thus - infertile...no good as pasture land. These days, those are very nice-nice to extremely-nice ret...

You could build a “shoe tree” kinda deal that stretches the case while not in use to “form” the case. Just needs to match the dimensions close enough. Reminds me of putting softballs in my baseball gloves… . . . and then tuck it under your mattress and sleep on it. :smilie8: (thanks for the sweet w...
