Re: striking the bell
First off, the bell is made of brass. Brass is soft and dents easily. Unless the horn is an old "beater" horn, in order to avoid any personal bodily injury, I'd recommend not doing this at all.

Re: Mouthpiece Pouchs
I have a Protec double, but turned around and bought a Protec Triple after I decided that I had 3 mouthpieces that I really wanted to take with me. Since I use stainless steel mouthpieces exclusively, I really don't have to worry about scratches. I also do not play trombone or baritone, so I can't ...

Re: Mouthpiece Rim Sizes
Sellmansberger mouthpieces are very good, that's why I own one. First and foremost, get away from the traditional silver-plated brass mouthpieces and spend the extra buck on a good stainless steel mouthpiece. Your face will thank you for it. Your lips will be far less prone to breaking out in rashes ...

I too would love to learn bagpipes, however a good set of pipes is cost prohibitive for me. I do have a guitar though and am currently trying to find someone local willing to give a 67 year old retired truck driver some lessons.

Re: A easy question about a tuba in the pit
This of course depends on the setting of your platform. Nobody walks by where I set my horn and I place my horn on it's bell as well. The only person who might walk near my horn sits to my left and he usually exits to the left. I set my horn down to my right, where as I said, nobody walks by

I'm 67 and I play everything from a Zo Tiny Dragon to a 5/4 sized Miraphone Hagen.

Re: Mutes
I love the way a Humes & Berg Mute looks and would love to have one. The throat of my 496 seems a bit large for one though. I had the same issue with the 187 I used to have. The H&B would drop right in. I used a Tennessee Tech mute on it for a while because it was the only thing I could find that ...

Re: Tuba for Travel
As someone who has lived and worked around Africa for many years, for heaven's sake, don't take a tuba of any kind, on your trip. It will become an extra piece of irritating luggage. Especially Africa. I have heard that they will only allow a certain amount of luggage to leave, but you can bring ...

Do you still have to wait forever for them to process your order though? I had to cancel an order with them on account of their delay.

Re: Eastman EEP321 vs. John Packer JP274
As far as your fingerings are concerned, compensating means nothing. Your fingerings will remain the same and Baritone Treble Clef parts should be readily available. If your church group doesn't have these parts, the difficulty will arise there. My only suggestion is that you'd also need to learn ...

Re: A question of "playability'.....
Being primarily a church musician myself I would say that a lot of it has to do with not only the responsiveness of the horn but it's ability to play in tune. I own a few horns and my ZO Tiny Dragon is gonna be a bear to try to play in tune at fortissimo levels when that won't be the case for my ...
