Creative uses for an old gig bag?
The Pro Tec my Kanstul came with was starting to fall apart. The seams were tearing open, exposing the horn. Obviously it was getting dangerous to keep the horn in it, and luggage repair, shoe repair, and seamstresses wouldn't touch it, so I replaced it. Turned out for this horn, my options were rea...

Re: Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
Never thought about it. It might be, but the dent that's there was there when I got it. The horn is so freaking heavy, I just can't imagine the brass being so thin.

Re: Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
My silver Willson 2900 never had so much as a dent up to the point it was stolen. I remember Gail Robertson warning me about a gig bag, that a dent was inevitable. I didn't heed her warning...then one day I was on my way to a concert and the hardware on my Pro Tec bag snapped and the horn started to...

Re: It's almost fixed!
You can probably get rid of that wiped solder (around the bottom bow joints) using (progressively) 250 - 600 - 1000 (probably good enough, but then if you choose) - 1500 grit sandpaper. Squirt valve oil on the instrument - when using the 1000/1500. I ended up with another round of aircraft paint st...

Re: Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
Somewhere, I've heard that Scotchbrite pads hide incomplete dent removal and out-of-round issues...I can't remember where... Wouldn't that be by giving it a "brushed" look? I've found a good patina does that, too. It makes sense that shiny brass will show more imperfections; it's actually...

Re: Rich Matteson albums
Oh cool! I knew about Uniquely Rich, but couldn't find the album uploaded. Same with Tubajazz Live! I did, however, find these albums because of your post: Easy Street: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r96EKDxEBAY&list=OLAK5uy_kY69QTRisQqDJPpUAHMnMZ6-B63JuApTo&index=2 Superhorn: https://www.y...

So it wasn't invented by Private Little?
This is really great information. Thanks for the video!

Rich Matteson albums
I woke up this morning deciding to find as much of Rich online as I can. I found a bunch of albums. This first one is of the Riverboat Five. I know there has to be a better fidelity out there (or maybe it's what I'm currently listening on), because I can barely hear Rich on the helicon. I started a ...

Re: It's almost fixed!
Well, this was an old high school horn. The bell has been rolled out a number of times that it's really thin, there were numerous dents pulled after I got it, and the reason the valve block was sent off is because some of the slides were so out of alignment it needed a full overhaul just so the 3rd ...

Re: Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
Maybe. I just got the Brasso a week ago to clean the dirty brass on the sousaphone--it was staining my shirts (I'll never use my "good" shirts with the sousaphone because of that). I figure I can empty the bottle on the Conn. Yeah, the bell is so thin you can run your finger on one side of...

Re: Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
Just make sure nothing's plated! Nope! Stripped this horn about a decade ago. Figured with the valves off, I could hit some of the places the lacquer just didn't come off. I was kinda hopeful the aircraft paint stripper would shine up the brass, like it did when I stripped the lacquer the first tim...

Hand polishing with Brasso...tips?
I've done a pass with the Brasso on the Conn bugle section, and it needs a couple more passes. Looks like, from what I can gather, I get more mileage out of LESS pressure and letting the chemicals do the job, rather than trying to scrub it on in. Is that a fair assessment? Since the valve block is c...

It's almost fixed!
So, a year ago, I finished subbing on a tour with Chicago the Musical for three months with my Conn 12J. The horn is so great for that kind of music, that I was loathe to get rid of it. Decided to ship the valves out for an overhaul for a really great price. They're finally on their way back, and I'...

Re: WTB: Gig bag that fits Kanstul 900-4B
So, after all of that, I just ended up getting the same case: The Pro Tec Gold large tuba bag for ~$230. Couldn't find any other options outside of a custom case from Cronkhite, which I simply couldn't afford at the moment. Apparently the "Gold" cases from Pro Tec are known to have issues ...

Re: What model is this euph?
It's marketed as a "baritone" mouthpiece on the Dennis Wick site, but I assume all the specs besides the shank size are the same. It certainly looks like it when comparing in the descriptions. Yes. British Brass Band Baritone. The same receiver and shank size as tenor trombone and America...

Re: tenor tuba check offs
Yep, but that shouldn't ruin it for everyone, really. And I don't think that contractor actually does that, honestly. I think some string player started the rumor and everyone jumped on board.

Re: tenor tuba check offs
Agree. With a specific contractor, I like hanging out with the principal cellist. I was about to order a beer on dinner break, and he said "oh, you can't do that with [contractor]. You know how he comes around during dinner and checks on everyone? Well, he's Mormon, so he's making sure you don'...
