Re: Polka Music Repository- Post Your Recordings Here
So... How do they play it? Just fewer fills, R/5 movements with few walkups. So in general, simpler. Funny thing is, they're very good players in their own right, so it might be the bandleader's decision to play simpler. I'm also a bass player, and those two disciplines wind up in each others ...

Re: Polka Music Repository- Post Your Recordings Here
Thanks! Yeah, it's so counterintuitive to playing jazz, where the notes get a bit longer the more modern you go. I found some recordings where the baritone player was playing so short, you almost wonder if he was playing at all. I love that your fills are very unique; every tune I've studied, I've ...

Re: alphorn
What I've learned with the alphorn: 1.) Everyone locally (which is like four guys) plays in F. 2.) Finding actual literature is extremely difficult. I assume it's either because it's learned by rote or because I don't understand German. The only two alphorn calls I know, I can't tell you what they ...

Re: My Funny Valentine
And when learning any tune, my favorite method is to study Ella first, because the chords are usually the most "right," then Miles, because he's usually the "standard" way of playing the tune...though I'm sure that's not the case in this particular tune. The other thing is that it's always best to ...

Re: Tablet Holder Recommendation
Hercules makes a great tablet clamp. I have one, but I still prefer a music stand when I can get away with it; you can now use it to hold everything in your pockets, as well as valve oil, without it getting in the way of the music. Hercules is the only brand of stands I trust with everything. I use ...

Choctaw (OK) Oktoberfest 2018. After a long week and countless liters, they want the fast stuff. :smilie6: Miraphone 181 6v GB Blokepiece Solo #0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlOAp2oe6XQ DUDE. I learned this tune years ago to sub with the German band at Disney, and none of the stable of tuba ...

Re: RIP Chick Corea
Something I'll always remember is Oystein telling me that he almost had Chick do a concert with him at ITEC 2002 in Greensboro. There was just a scheduling conflict keeping Chick from making the conference.
Pretty sure that would have been one of the most legendary ITEC performances.

Re: FS: Willson Euphonium and Gig Bag
Funny you mention the Bach suites, because I find them to be most playable, for me at least, on the Eb tuba I played my last year in undergrad, followed by the 3/4 CC, and then euphonium, and then BBb. Hopefully once I’m done moving every year I can look into purchasing a tuba again. I'd love an Eb/ ...

Re: FS: Willson Euphonium and Gig Bag
Man...if I lived closer...AND had the bread. My 2900S was stolen like 8 years ago. When I got the insurance check, I decided it was better to put the money toward more sensible things (like rent, which I was struggling with at the time), and it forced me to really take tuba more seriously. I had ...

Re: Cerveny 654-6X F-Tuba 3800 OBO
I've been in touch with him, and have considered it. He said OBO, but maybe not by much, as he's comparing it to new prices. It came from Germany, and was said to be a prototype of the model. I bet it plays pretty well, but... Cerveny tubas of any vintage rarely carry much of a premium. Spending ...

Re: Amusing observation from the lockdown
[/quote] Next time you put the horn on the shelf for an extended period, try putting Marvel Mystery Oil on the valves. They'll still move freely after even years of sitting. Ooh, I didn't know this! I'm going to have to start that! By the way, agreed on sriracha. Gigs are slowly coming back, Not in ...

Amusing observation from the lockdown
I've had other long stints of no practicing when other things are going on, but I took a break from tuba around June/July. Gigs are slowly coming back, so I'm working on my chops again (incidentally, after a few days back, I actually feel BETTER than I did when I left the horn). Obviously, the ...

RIP Dennis Askew
Just received word that Dennis Askew passed.
I don't even remember if I met him, but I was at ITEC when it was at UNC Greensboro. That particular conference was the turning point of my interest in becoming a professional musician.

Re: Microphone mounts
I prefer the belt pack as it makes it easy to mute/unmute. Ooh, that's actually a very valid point. I just was never a fan of the wires, but maybe I'll think about that. Yeah, still on tuba; unless my commercial standing tuba gigs takes a major uptick (which doesn't look like it'll happen anytime ...

Re: Microphone mounts
It's sturdy, and isn't hurting the bell? It's sturdy. But as I said before, the gooseneck wasn't really stiff enough for my use. The bell-mount part, though, is very sturdy. No worries about it coming off the bell. I haven't noticed any ill effects (scratches, dents, etc.). As for the Shu, I used ...

Re: Microphone mounts
I use one of these https://www.thomann.de/gb/km_10000_mikrohalter_fuer_tuba.htm It's pricey, but very good. I use that mount as well. I noticed this one a lot in my searches. It's sturdy, and isn't hurting the bell? Though, this would mostly be used on my 12J, so scratches really aren't too much a ...

Microphone mounts
So I decided it's time to get a microphone mount for the horn. I really want to go wireless for gigs where I'm standing, and at the German pavilion at Epcot, they duct tape a Shure PGXD2 into the bell of the tuba for some sound reinforcement. I've experimented with my SM57 at home and there's just ...

Re: more crap repair...no "during" pics...warning: boring
It's currently fine, not 100% even (which isn't a big deal), but I've been told that if it needs to be rolled out again, the flare will just fall off, because the metal is too thin. I'm just going to leave it as is for now, but if it gets bad, I was thinking about it. Your explanation makes sense ...

Re: more crap repair...no "during" pics...warning: boring
Out of curiosity, are replacement bells on these horns pointless to buy? As in, are you better off just buying a new horn rather than replacing the bell? My 12J has a beat-up bell, and I've been told the metal isn't in any shape to have it rolled out any better than it is...and I've been told the ...

Ha! When I'm reading or writing complex paragraphs, I have to pause or mute the video. Instead of both going on at the same time, it feels like my brain is A/B-ing channels back and forth.
