Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

Often you don’t need a mute very often, but when you do need it it’s pretty darn important to have it. A younger version of myself may have gotten a bollocking for not having a mute when I needed it. Don’t be like me, just have it. Well, a local just DMed me with an offer to buy his at a good price...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

All joking aside, is there possibly a university nearby( with a tuba prof' ) that may have a mute that can be loaned out? That's actually who I got. Bonus is he's in the town of the show, which is a few hours away, so I am just getting it on the way to the venue with no detour and dropping it off b...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

I forgot to mention the kicker, as I'm working on this music: There's a few sections calling for straight mute, a few calling for harmon (!?) mute. I'm totally NOT going that far into finding something, and if expecting a tuba player to have a mute is already unreasonable, expecting one to have acce...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

I'd like to see someone use a giant plunger on tuba.... with a foot operated lever setup.... hmmn.. I'll have to work on this idea... Sent from my SM-S367VL using Tapatalk I had this idea in college for euphonium, when I thought I might be the next Rich Mattesson. I'm glad I realized how ridiculous...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

I also think the confusion is "mute" in this context is from the Latin "mutare," which means to change. The more common use of "mute" is from the Latin "mutus," or someone who doesn't speak.

Make a really good fake, looks like a mute prop......[emoji1787] Sent from my SM-S367VL using Tapatalk The guy playing tuba for the show on Saturday night is using a mute he constructed from a styrofoam cone. I had an open offer to use that, but he's established with the contractor, but I am not es...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

Well, if I ever come across a dirt-cheap mute (likely a beat-up Stonelined if we're being realistic), I'd probably paint it black and make it look halfway presentable.

I built my tuba gigs up with a very well-used 12J, I could do it with an ugly mute!

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

Yeah, I feel like if my job was full-time tuba-ing, then I should have one or two mutes. Or, in other words, if I had a need for a contrabass AND a bass tuba, then I probably have a need for a mute. As a freelancer, where I'm more likely to be playing in a jazz band than I am an orchestra, I don't k...

Re: How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

ONCE is too many.  I get it with this show, since it's the Danny Elfman Batman soundtrack, but it feels like it's rare enough that I still shouldn't even consider buying my own. Bass tubas "deal with" mutes better than (most) contrabass tubas. Oh man. And I'll be using the 5...

How frequent do you see a need for a tuba mute?

Been gigging for about a decade on tuba. Just started getting more orchestral gigs on the calendar, and just got the music for Sunday's concert--and there's a number of calls for a tuba mute. I'm arranging to borrow one, but I feel like it's happened so rarely that this seems better than wasting mon...

I found a couple of those bare brass rings sitting around. Polished brass; no seams Rough dimensions: 1.Outside dia: 3.5 cm, Inside dia: 2.6 cm Thickness: 4.5 mm. 2.Outside dia: 4.25 cm Inside dia: 3.15 cm Thickness: 5.30 mm If you're interested in messing with them, send me an address and I'll dro...

Re: Annoying thumb ring--suggestions?

The Conn may very well be a smaller one (the valveset is in a shop in Texas being overhauled), but the Kanstul I would say is for older players. It's a 5/4 BBb that weighs about 35 lbs. I think I can fit my thumb all the way in to the last knuckle, but I basically balance it on the first knuckle, ri...

Annoying thumb ring--suggestions?

All of my horns have a thumb ring that's basically a flat piece of brass rolled into a ring, with the edges rolled inward as a "lip." https://i.imgur.com/Ieci6ow.jpg I usually rest the knuckle of my thumb on the inside of the ring so that I'm not adding tension, but I guess it's not helpin...

Dents Be Gone! wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 12:43 pm Cleaning vinegar is 6% acid. Those are $4-ish.

This other super-vinegar stuff is 30% acid and around $20-ish. Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. commonly carry it.

Re: How much vinegar?

Hmmm. I just know my dad was at Home Depot, and I said, "while you're at it..." He called me from the register and said the two gallons of vinegar added ~$50 to his total. I wonder what he grabbed now... By the way, after all of that, one of the 4th valve slides is still catching when push...

Re: How much vinegar?

Anyone else thinking of cleaning anything with 30% cleaning vinegar should really do some research on the potential dangers and how to handle it. Oh yeah. I totally used 6% vinegar because I didn't want everything to be so fast that I lose track of time and mess something up badly. And 6% vinegar w...

I might have to try this. One of the fourth valve tubes is still really sluggish. Guessing I didn't get all of the calcium buildup in it.

Re: How much vinegar?

So, I'm currently FINALLY doing this, and I learned a few things: 1) Two gallons was just barely enough to do the Kanstul AND a trombone. I'm just doing that as well as potential bone gigs are (surprisingly) lining back up. I corked off the outer slide and they're secure enough that I was able to po...

Re: Used some of my bass gear this month and it was a game changer.

I have a strap for the 12J, but I didn't want to add eyelets to the Kanstul. It's meant to be a sitting horn, and I wanted to keep it that way.

Because of that, I picked up some endurance in my left arm, and a HELL of a callus in my right thumb from the ring!

Re: Used some of my bass gear this month and it was a game changer.

I love effects on the tuba! I have been using my Pedaltrain Nano board which is limited in space. But I miss my MXR Auto-Q pedal every time I want a synthy sound, I might have to find a way to squeeze it on there, big as it is. The octaver thing is so freaking awesome on tuba, as is the phaser--I re...
