It's in Fort Worth. It's called 5-Line Technology. He takes a while but does a good job.

Re: Orlando CL: YBB-104, $500

Ha! That looks like it's in an area that would be suspect to me, too.

I don't think it came from the high school there, though. I don't think they have any Yamahas, but I could be wrong.

Re: Conn 4J...and now? Mouthpiece?

Terry Warburton would tell you to use something that's not even close to your euph mouthpiece, because you're going to need to play differently, anyway. But for me, it really didn't matter what mouthpiece I started on (which probably was an 18, if I remember). It's just more the time you put into ...

Re: What model is this euph?

So, after another search attempt, here's what i found: Model 83, 84, and 85 all seem to be 3v models. The B-101 seems to be the closest. I did try searching for a B-100, and I found an archive for an old eBay listing that has a bell-front instrument, but it looked like a 3-valve from the thumbnail ...

Re: Creative uses for an old gig bag?

Not a bad idea. Someone asked for it to see if they can repair it, still waiting on what their hobby seamstress friend thinks.

Also might cannibalize the zippers as replacements.

Re: Wessex Helicon

That's really cool. You know, about 5 years ago, I saw a tenor helicon in a local antique store. Had no clue what to think about it so I didn't get it. Now I regret it; I don't think it's there anymore.

Re: Wessex Helicon

Also, just like the oberkrainer recording you posted, I've noticed studio recordings almost always have the baritone play more than one track. In this one, it sounds like it's just the baritone playing both the bass and melody, but in many, it's that they go back and overdub the baritone part with a ...

Re: Wessex Helicon

Oberkrainer makes use of baritone almost exclusively. Helicons are used in various bands around SW Germany. Not in the traditional Ernst Mosch instrumentation, of course (BBb and F are the normal choices). Smaller groups with only one tuba often employ F tuba, some occasionally BBb, and sometimes ...

This is so very cool! Are there videos of this particular horn? I've never seen a COPPER serpent!

Re: Wessex Helicon

Man, Bill, I'll never get tired of your sound. I've always wondered, though: American tubists seem to insist that helicon is played commonly in blasmusik bands, but I usually see baritone more often than any form of tuba, especially in oberkrainer music. I assume the helicon was more often seen in ...

Re: Creative uses for an old gig bag?

One of my bandmates got a new Protec bag for a Miraphone 187 to replace the longtime Protec bag before it. This new one has fallen apart in just a few years of use. The strap anchor needed repair and the edge seem on the bag is failing too. That's disappointing to hear. The new bag is the same ...

I don't miss the extra few notes when I'm playing the kind of gigs I would with those instruments (jazz/funk/commercial). It's just like ...

Re: Most popular types of music in the USA over the decades - video

I remember playing some disco covers at clubs, and being super bored playing the bass lines to so many of them. I get a big kick out of disco tunes, because while they're not so technically difficult, the pocket can be so deep when I lock into the drum set. Funny thing; when I was learning bass in ...

I am curious about the genre "chanson," since that literally means "song" in French, does it mean French popular music?

Re: Most popular types of music in the USA over the decades - video

In those areas, polka is doing OK(especially with the Czechs). So there's polka in Oklahoma? That song might write itself! I like this video. Kinda weird to differentiate "jazz," "bebop," and "cool jazz," as they're all really just jazz in general and were the evolution of the genre as much as the ...

Joseph Lidl bass trumpet, bore a millimeter smaller than that Miraphone. And like $2k more. Edit: Oh wait, I got that confused with the Thein...which someone on here is selling it for $8k used. And I'm not saying the horn isn't great, or that's not the market value (I don't know), but it seems a ...

Re: Got the tuba blues

Chinese named horn Did they name it Bill, or something? I do wanna say this, since it seemed nobody else said it: My first tuba was a VERY beat-up Conn 12J. Took me about a year to sound like a tuba player, rather than a euphonium player on tuba. Even then, I wasn't great. Between my chops and the ...

Is there enough freelance or teaching in that area to make a living wage? I would seriously doubt it, unless there was a demand for teaching there. Re: Creative uses for an old gig bag?

Look up a textile recycling place or drop box near you if you can't find another use. Cordura or similar materials are highly recyclable and it at least keeps it out of your garbage. That's definitely a good option! I would order 200 gig bags if they would make them in a couple different unique ...

Re: Creative uses for an old gig bag?

I really like the platinum level bags, I wish they made them in more than one size. Agreed. Their Platinum line only had an 18" bell? I think? And while the Kanstul site says this is an 18" bell, the tape measure put it in a solid 19". I wasn't about to play with that extra bit of size. This was ...
