Re: PA FB: Distin Euph? Eb?

Beautiful! Get some tarnx and polish on that and   :tuba: BTW, I think the patterns are stamped down the length of the bell and all, not engraved. At least that's what Vince told me to at the tuba museum. I forget if Distin came before Keefer or vice versa, but one bought out the ...

Re: Wessex Tubby Eb

I played this horn today. A guy I trust implicitly who is mainly an Eb guy played this horn today as well. There's something weird about the response of the 4th valve for Bb - the 4th bore is .790 and the first three are .750 with the 5th (rotor) being .850. Maybe it's just a "get used to it&q...

Re: Wessex Tubby Eb

Years ago a friend had this old conn tuba that was the biggest Eb tuba I had ever saw. Looked like a full sized BBb. That particular instrument had the worst low register of anything I’ve ever played. I wonder if they took something like that and fixed the issues and copied it. Looks very large for ...

Saw this over at the U today... 95% sure I know who it is, but I didn't recognize the car so I won't mention any names. Guess I'll have to do TUBAIST... https://i.ibb.co/KFvWvjs/20230202-144549.jpg I forget his name but he’s over in Minnetonka somewhere not far from me. He attends the same ch...

Re: Help telling what key a sousaphone is in, please

My easiest way to tell between an Eb and BBb sousaphone is the top of the third valve tubing. If there is a loop in it, its a BBb. If there isn't a loop (like in arpthark 's picture), its in Eb. On sousaphones, I don't think I've seen an exception to that. https://uploads.tapatal...

YCB-822 = 4/4 CC
YCB-826 = 6/4 CC
I stand corrected. I did not see the 826 on the web site.

The 822 appears to be it on the web site. They do not refer to it as the “yamayork” though.

Re: Relative worth of high price horns

A personal note on people holding onto horns. My primary horn is meinl weston 2145. Little brother to the 2155 mentioned above. I have considered selling it several times. BUT when i play it, i feel like I'm falling in love every time. I bought it used at dillon 21 years ago. And the previous owner...

Re: Early 1900s Eb Horn parts?

That horn is beautiful. What is that mouthpiece comparable to size wise? Trombone, trumpet, french horn? Hard to tell in the picture. Buying one is a consideration down the road. Im a crazy guy and i love oddball instruments. Also, would you (i) read the music like a trumpet as in its transposed an...

This is what I have. I don’t know if it’s what your referring to. I know it’s pitched in Eb. I thought it was York Master but only engraved York.

Re: Early 1900s Eb Horn parts?

Back more than 20 or so years ago custom music had a whole pallet of those back in the back just piled upon one another. I was able to pick one up for pretty cheap. A couple small dings in it but appeared to be new never used otherwise. Mine is a York master with a recording bell. Sent from my iPhon...

Re: Relative worth of high price horns

I wonder how they can legally steal tech and designs like they do. Also what is the life expectancy of these cheaply made copies? An acquaintance of mine had developed a student model French horn. He was working with one of the factories in China. This is 20 years ago when this took place. At that t...

That small one with the small shank might be the ticket for this little York master I’ve acquired.

Re: Willson Silver Plated E♭-Tuba

OK...but - to me - It makes no sense to write an E-flat part in a brass band piece below A, as there are also BB-flat tubas. I agree, I played in a brass band in Michigan for a number of years. We competed at nabba and the us open. I don’t remember ever have music that went very low on either Eb pa...

Re: Willson Silver Plated E♭-Tuba

This little York master I’ve just acquired fits the bill for what I wanted it for. 15 inch bell and a smaller throat. I’d love a 4th valve but it plays well as is. Nice looking instrument, enjoy. My similar but smaller old Besson has a water key on the first valve slide and at some point one on the...
