Re: School me on piston valves- materials and construction

I until recently owned a Holton helicon from around 1924. The valves were not plated with anything and were some type of copper/bronze alloy? They were copper in color and were still pretty tight. I think Holton was the only one who used this and I don’t know a lot about them. Seemed to work ok. Sen...

Does Gronitz still make tubas? The web site appears to be up.

Re: Super strange and rare Instrument. Looking for Infos

Very interesting,

As usual you sound amazing on it. I bet it’s a challenge to even play. I find vintage instruments very interesting and I’ve never seen anything like this before.

I might have the Eb bass part somewhere on paper. No files of it stored anywhere I can easily email though.

Re: PB Blaster still the best for stuck slides?

clarification: I'm no champion nor apologist for PB Blaster... I've just found that it's pretty good at doing stuff that it doesn't claim to be able to do. If I came across something that worked better (as far as quick/b.s. freeing lime-stuck rotors) and was cheaper, I'd be glad to use it - particu...

Re: John Packer JP379F Piston F Tuba for Sale $5700 obo

Anchoring? Yeah what my co worker had was called the anchovy thumb procedure. Weird. I don’t remember why the name but it’s a real name and he had the explanation why they called it what it is but I don’t remember the story. Not something I look forward to in my future. I’m left handed so makes sen...

Re: John Packer JP379F Piston F Tuba for Sale $5700 obo

A friend of mine had surgery on their thumb where it was attached at a different spot, to eliminate pain and to maintain functionality. I really don't understand it, but apparently it worked. They were having trouble obviously with the fifth valve. I'm pretty sure that they were hurting from the su...

Re: PB Blaster still the best for stuck slides?

That's interesting - and I wouldn't dispute it ... :smilie8: ...but they were dealing with rusted steel (probably threaded nuts/bolts ??), and we are dealing with copper alloys' surfaces being stuck together for one or more of several reasons. - plain ol' corrosion/oxidation - leached solder acid -...

Re: PB Blaster still the best for stuck slides?

Hi- Is PB Blaster with some heat still the preferred penetrating oil for stuck slides? Tnx Mark I cannot confirm if it is safe for brass but the best penetrating oil I have ever used is called Kroil. Far superior to PB but I have not researched if it safe on brass. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: NStar

I actually don't remember when I tried the Star Light, but it was clearly, for me, not what I wanted. If I had never played an Norwegian Star, I might have gone for the Light, but perhaps the Light is better for solos --- however I can't imagine the Star to be anything but wonderful in any circumst...

yeah... If the NS is the larger of the two, I played one ONCE for about two minutes, and thought it to be quite good. I'm thinking that I played it in Knoxville (??). It belonged to a fellow forums member. The small one is the star light. I’ve not played either but always wanted to try one. I’d pre...

If I had known I would get recovered enough to play tuba again, never, ever would I have sold my NStar. It was the perfect tuba for me. I want another Norwegian Star. Odd that one appears to only have 4 valves. I’ve always wanted to try one of those the 5 valve one that is.

Re: Eastman 632 vs. 832

SIDEBAR: I still believe that if somebody would make a superb B-flat copy of a 32-in tall X 19" 4/4 York or Holton with a modern valve section, that people would love it, compared to Kings and copies of Kings - whether the King copy were B-flat or cut to C. Mine (modernized Holton B-flat) is a...
