Re: Hard Cases for Sousaphones

There are a couple of the used flight cases on eBay. I’ve watched one for a long time. Been on there listed for more than a year. I believe but can’t confirm that SKB and MTS appear to be very similar. Not sure one would be bigger than the other.

Re: Martin Medium Eb and Monster Eb comparison photos

So do you think someone could retrofit a 6 rotor valve block on a Medium like this? If it was in bad shape, I would consider experimenting with it. I've also heard suggestions of getting an old King 2341 valve block and cutting the slides WAY down and patching that in, and benefit from a larger bor...

Re: WTB: Willson 3400 (Large or compact)

There was someone on here who posted an add wanting to trade the larger 3400 for something else. Maybe he would possibly sell instead of trade.

Re: Mirafone C4 Mouthpiece

I aways though that the Giddings Alan Baer Original F mpc (not the MMVI) was comparable to the C4. Might be worth a look or an email to Alan even. I bought that one from Ivan when it was still a prototype. I had him narrow my rim slightly and bought one in titanium during my single years when I cou...

Re: FS: Conn 2J CC Tuba $900 OBO

My first tuba I actually owned was a conn 3j. I miss it. Won a college scholarship with it. Traded it to get my PT4. They gave me a lot less than it was probably worth at custom music.

Re: the heartbreak of heliconkneesis

I marched with the Salvation Army at the Detroit thanksgiving day parade many years ago but I had to use a beat up small Holton tuba. One of the tuba players was the other Eb bass in the brass band I played in. He cracked up when I started playing the intro to “the undaunted” on that worn out old tu...

Re: Brushed finish?

I used a fine steel wool when removing the old lacquer from this little York master 20 plus years ago. Does not look as cool as the factory conn but not bad and I did not re apply lacquer. I left it raw brass. Those conns were neat with the different finished. My teacher bought the 56j in satin silv...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

At the time, my younger kid was about 6 months old... So my two kids had a cumulative age of less than 3 years. I had no patience, no time, and no confidence that I'd do it correctly myself, and was glad that Martin would do it for me. Willi Kurath provided me with a number of parts orders over a f...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

I'm watching the mail - as I type this - for my next shipment of Miraphone parts. Even when Christian is out of the office (as he currently is), he (or someone) arranges for my parts orders to be rounded up and promptly shipped. The fun thing about owning a Miraphone instrument is that (re: parts a...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

I wouldn't mess with the valves, but it's completely your call. If you do anything (just as I advised Brett, but he chose to have someone else do it - rather than doing it himself) you could cut the extra chunks of metal (which create the faux porting) out of the rotor, thus increasing the bore siz...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

I’m planning on him doing that mod on my 5th valve. I don’t know how much improvement there will be since it’s primarily a piston tuba with the 5th used a lot less but an improvement is still something. I’m actually really happy with the ergonomics of my Eb and I didn’t mind my CC either. I did play...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

Got it! Thanks for the clarification. Willi usually answers fairly quickly. His contact info can be found on Willson's website. Thanks, I didn’t know who to even contact. Seems since DEG in longer the distributor there’s a lot less information out there. I don’t even know who took it over. I assume...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

I've communicated with Willi Kurath directly and he's always answered. For which model are you seeking pistons? You may be aware of this but I'll point it out anyway; if your horn has worn pistons and casings, simply replacing the pistons won't solve the problem. The casings need to be honed and ov...

Re: parts availability, as a consideration for purchasing a brand/maker

I started thinking about a set of maw valves for my Willson. Martin does not have a drop in set made for this tuba and so my only option is to buy a new set of pistons from Willson and then Martin will convert my old original set into maw valves. I’ve emailed Getzen but it really seems since DEG wen...

Re: Sold: Bb-Tuba Willson 3100-FA 5

There’s another one up from the same seller. For parts but looks mostly complete and probably was neglected. Stuck slides, valves, valve buttons missing and one broken off. I’d love to buy it but I’ve spent my tuba budget already this year. The hard shell case it comes with is very nice. I had one y...

Re: Minnesota Tuba Workshop #2! - has changed locations!

I'm in Chicago for work through Saturday, so I would be Sunday-only... And I have to say, after being away for a week already, it might be a big ask to try to skip out on Sunday all day for tuba stuff. I'd better be real good the next few weeks! I believe they have changed it to one day onl...

Re: Willson 3050 CC at BBC

I checked -- for insurance purposes, I had requested a quote for the price of a new silver plated 3050RZ back in 2017. Using the 2016 price list, it was quoted at just under $21k. Adjusting for inflation, that's over $26k now. I sold mine, I believe, for $8,000 in 2017. Adjusting for inflation, tha...

Re: Willson 3050 CC at BBC

I feel like I haven't seen one of these for sale in ages... They have their ups and downs to many people, but I've been thinking of my rotary Willson 3050 a lot recently, and miss many things about it. When I owned it, I tried a piston 3050 at BBC (this was around 2017) and thought it was about 95%...

Lee Stofer had a kanstul 66T when I was visiting. I was offered to try it out. I liked that tuba quite a bit. Sad they are no longer being made.
