Re: King 4 valve E flat sousaphone

A friend of mine in Mississippi rounded up a bell that ended up featuring the correct throat diameter and the correct length, was silver, and was engraved either King (??) or Cleveland (??) ...so he ended up with a nice 4-valve "King/King" (all King-made) E-flat helicon. I dunno whether h...

Re: King 4 valve E flat sousaphone

I had one from 2000-2008 and I loved it. Only sold it when I went through job loss. Dan tuba had one for sale a year or so ago that I bought and had rebuilt. I just picked it up this year. Plays really well now. I believe there were a lot of these made for the military as both mine had the U. S. On ...

Thanks! That’s interesting. Hopefully I can make it over there someday. I’d love to tour the factory.

Re: Shops that will re-finish a tuba

I also don't want some green horn trying to buff someone's $8,000 tuba and letting the buffing wheel grab it and throw it up against the wall. To clarify, I wasn't suggesting any any instrument repair hobbyshop type stuff would occur on instruments provided by (other) paying customers. That would b...

Re: Sold: Bb-Tuba Willson 3100-FA 5

Start with a circle of brass. Heat it up Then take a giant cone shaped metal form hydraulically push the brass circle from a 2D to 3D shape Or that's always what I had envisioned https://www.valueresearchonline.com/content-assets/images/49359_20210524-vr-premium-graphic-1_1__w660__.jpg That’s fine ...

Re: Sold: Bb-Tuba Willson 3100-FA 5

With 27 lbs., it depends on where most of the pounds are, when it comes down to trying to balance a tuba and playing it. They claim the bell is “one piece seamless” I don’t really understand how it could be. I should weigh my Eb but I’ve played it over 20 years now. I guess I’m used to it. The litt...

Re: Sold: Bb-Tuba Willson 3100-FA 5

Those are quite top-heavy instruments. I'm thinking they make their bells in a different way than to most others...thus the bells themselves are quite heavy. Just as I figured, it sold on eBay for just about what I would have asked for it - had I been able to grab it for resale... ...which is why I...

Re: Brass band guys: Barn Dance and Cowboy Hymn

I’m sure I played that with the motor city brass band years ago. I’m sorry I don’t remember the specifics of it but we played it for sure. I played it on Eb tuba. I may have that part stashed away somewhere but I left the group in 2008. I’ll look to see if we had recorded it if I have that. Sent fro...

Re: Bb-Tuba Willson 3100-FA 5

I had a 3050 for a few years. Was a really good match to my Willson Eb. I’d buy this in a heartbeat if I were in the market again for a large tuba. A BBb would be more attractive to me now since I have played quite a bit of brass band music and if I had to play the BBb parts the transposition for me...

Re: POLL TO POSSIBLY EVENTUALLY EMAIL (LINK) TO PRO-TEC

My King sousaphone came with a pro tec bag and it’s actually pretty nice. One to fit a vintage tuba 15 inch bell and 35 inches tall would be wonderful.

Re: King (?) Helicon, Portland area

valves... OK...sorry...We're just looking at pictures. I am assuming it is only three years apart from my original one and assuming it would be similar. The bugle looks exactly the same as mine but mine had a different main tuning slide. Kind of looks like this was changed. Mine had the very curved...

Re: Tuba Shank Sizes

The (likely, no more than 1/4 inch) insertion of a “euro” shank mouthpiece into a “standard” shank receiver can be overcome - overall length-wise - by pushing in a main slide only 1/8 of an inch. More significant, exposing more or less of the small end of the inside of a mouthpiece receiver – which...

Re: Wessex Tubby Eb

I know aesthetics don't mean a whole lot ("the sound" + "the intonation" + "the response" trump everything else, obviously), but this model tuba just kinda looks weird. Over never played one and doubt I ever will. I just like the idea of a large Eb tuba. I’ve heard Wal...
