Re: Learn to play the bass guitar.
Good post, Bloke, makes a lot of sense. When I was younger, many adult tuba players I knew player either bass guitar or double bass as well (possibly both?). Does knowing the bass guitar translate well to learning the double bass and/or vice versa? I've wanted to learn double bass forever but never ...

Nice price, especially since it includes a hard case.

Very cool looking horn, I was looking at how long it takes to drive to Palm Springs (spoiler: far too long), so I'm glad someone else snagged it.

Re: Mouthpiece recs for VMI 3301 (B&S PT-2)
I actually had a PT-44 in a box (no idea where I got it) and tried it out yesterday. Much better than the PT-50. Need some more time with it to see if it's the right mouthpiece for the horn, but will give it a go for a few weeks and see if I want to keep looking. Thanks for the recs everyone!

Vintage B&S 6-valve BBb
Never seen a BBb like this with 6 valves. Have no idea if this price is reasonable or crazy but it's cool to look at!

Mouthpiece recs for VMI 3301 (B&S PT-2)
Basically the title - I purchased this VMI 3301 a few months ago and haven't found the right mouthpiece for it yet. As I mentioned elsewhere, this is the first time I've had a piston horn and I read somewhere that piston/rotor horns often prefer different mouthpieces. The only three mouthpieces I ...

Re: SIXTEEN (16) baritones (euphoniums)
When I was in high school, there were 10 tubas selected for All State - four for the top band, five for the second band, and one for the orchestra. The orchestra selection was the "last" chair - but in hindsight, that would have been a really cool experience to play with a full symphony orchestra ...

Re: Unhooking Joe's BBb Leash…
I played a hydraulic-formed Fafner once. Is that the 195? The 197 is the Bayreuth, right?
197 is the Melton 'Hilgers' kaiser-based-on-B&F stovepipe model.
There is also a 195-PH model which is the Paul Halwax (Wiener Phil) model, which is the handmade Fafner body with a stovepipe bell ...

Just adding my 2 euro-cents to the ones in this list I have played or owned:
Miraphone 'Slant Rotor' 289:
Played the 5 valve model, great tuba!
Selected this tuba over the Adams copy of the Hirsbrunner HBS 492 piston model for a friend
Totally agree. I toured the Miraphone factory ...

Re: Piston valve care and lubrication
Thank you everyone for the thoughts and links! This has given me a few ideas to pursue, and I definitely might consider getting the horn cleaned (though it does seem pretty clean at the moment). I'll try the regular oiling approach for a bit and see if that eliminates any "hang."
