Re: York 91 Vs CSO york

Wow. There are a lot of comments that differ from what I know first-hand about the CSO York tubas. As to comparing the York Model 91 to the CSO Yorks, they are vastly different but they have much in common. If you have a Model 91 BBb York, don't cut it to make a CC York, that doesn't work well. The ...

Re: 1914 Holton 3+1 "Monster" Eb tuba

My asking price is $1800. With all the service it's had, brand new case, etc, I think that's a fair price. I do need to sell it to have repairs done on my beloved 1999 Expedition, so I'll consider all reasonable offers! None of your photos picture the case which is part of the price. Can you post ...

Re: Discussion of tuba sizing

I was once in a very intense discussion about the nomenclature of 6/4 vs 5/4 vs 4/4 when Ed Jones, suggested that if the manufacturer says a tuba is a 5/4... it's a 5/4. When they say it's a 6/4, it's a 6/4. If they don't say, I don't suppose it matters. How happy would you be if Ford sold you a ...

Okay euphonium players, no more excuses for not practicing. Finally are REAL travel euphonium for a moderate price. It's new so it may not be at your local retailer's store yet but Christmas is coming. Follow the link and scroll down a bit for the hop arrangement of Saints played on this fabulous ...

That's a great price. Lots of people like to putter with these horns, you can putter with a guilt-free conscience for $400, IMHO.

Re: Are some tubas just better (or just not great) for bands?

It depends on your concept. If you see the tuba as a string bass substitute, a dark sounding Martin or 24J is your baby. If you see the tuba as the solo bass voice you want more color in the sound, instruments that have more overtones are what you need. I have played quite a number of CC tubas in ...

I am sorry to read that you've had a horn go into the ethos somewhere, I hope it turns up. In any case, I appreciate the heads-up on shipping by bus and train. Sad news all around.

Re: At a Crossroads with Playing....

If you have been playing BBb for 30 years, and are in your 40s, you don't need the hassle of learning CC fingerings at this point. Wait for a good BBb tuba and enjoy your playing as is. However if you are a professional, practicing 2 hours a day or so, you should be able to make the transition in a ...

Re: American F tuba/Fake f tuba

If you want to play a 184, go ahead and play it but it's not the sound I like to hear from an orchestral tuba. Is that the sound you want? A friend of mine asked me to listen to him play his 184 in a professional orchestra in a major city. He was a fine player but the 184 is simply not a great ...

Re: I'm gonna sell it.

True or false -- Rudy tried to court AJ with the 5/4 CC (maybe a silly question, maybe everyone tried to court AJ with every big tuba). Tony -- sorry, Powerball and Mega Millions both gave me the shaft this week. I won't be buying your tuba just yet. Everybody tried to "court" Mr. Jacobs. I ...

Re: Subcontrabass tubas, or just chubby contrabasses?

If i had to guess, yeah, the one on the left is low F, and the on the right low C, and perhaps the 4th valve onthe left gives them the right to call it a C? Similar logic as the A/Bb adjustment loops in some old trumpets. Trying to guess what anything is from a photo is one step up from totally ...

Re: orchestra brass balance

Some observations from a long time ago. I remember going to concerts at Orchestra Hall in Chicago in the early 70s. The sound you hear on recording is very similar to the sound we heard in person. I do remember going to a concert by a "not top five" orchestra. Halfway in to the first piece, I caught ...

At the bottom of the page is a listing of Baritone Violin, Soprano violin, Mezzo and Treble violins. Man, you opened up a treasure trove of insturments to go along with the baitone ukelele and soprano trombone.

Yeah, Wade, very nice arrangement!

Hey, props to Paul Evans the tuba player exltrodinaire, I've not heard him play before but solid throughout, including good pitch without a lot of slide finagaling. What horn is he playing so well on?
