Re: 4v Miraphone 186 CC at Dillon, $3295
The bell looks like it’s been smushed and re-straightened. Am I right?

The only model they make now is the 5J, so impact on the environment is minimal at best.

Re: Manufaktur (B&S) Model 3301 - Priced to sell $4,000
Yes, well, thank you for that offer. But I would not buy a tuba without a test drive first. But fear not, my friend. I believe you WILL sell this, and fairly quickly.

Re: Manufaktur (B&S) Model 3301 - Priced to sell $4,000
Why does EVERYBODY who lists this brand for sale list the brand as “Manufaktur”? How do they miss the big “VMI” logo above it? “VMI Manufaktur” literally means “made by VMI”. I had one of their 4 valve non compensating euphoniums for a while, purchased new from WWBW. I was very happy with it until I ...

Re: Cosmetic issue with my Kanstul
I had a Kanstul marching horn carcass here that I bought for the detachable bell. The lacquer was a bit darker than 'usual' but appeared factory. And while removing some of the braces, I couldn't mess up the lacquer no matter how hot I got the torch... I was amazed! Yeah, I was wondering if anybody ...

Cosmetic issue with my Kanstul
I bought this horn about a year and a half ago. I am at least the third owner, since the guy I bought it from purchased it used. So I don’t know it’s history. I do know it’s been worked on. The first and third slides have been lengthened. I have a suspicion that it MIGHT be an “Econo overhaul”. The l ...

Re: Synthetic valve oils
I have been using Bach Synthetic for a few years now. I think it does a great job. My reason for picking it is that Conn Selmer probably used it on my instrument before shipping it. The case papers state that synthetic lubricants were used at the factory and after all it is their brand. They also ...

Re: A question of "playability'.....
Interesting discussion. The primary horn I ended up with as a “comeback” player, the King “new style” 2341, is described by Conn/Selmer variously as “intermediate”, “step-up”, and even “professional”. So what makes it professional? Does anyone know a professional tuba player using a 2341? First, it’s ...

“When I was in high school (c. 1972 or so...and probably they were produced a bit earlier), the model 1270 "Standard" and model 1271 (three/four top-action piston B-flat tubas) were introduced by Miraphone with a c. 17mm (.669") bore size. ...I believe their competitor was/were the Meinl-Weston 10/1 ...

Re: rare-ish find in Seattle: Kanstul 902-3B BBb $1,300
Yes indeed, interesting and a rare bird. I have the same horn. But my lacquer is intact and I have what believe to be the original case. I don’t believe the detachable valve section is a mod. I think they came from the factory like that. Mine has it. Also a detachable lead pipe. Very sweet playing h ...

Re: Nice plumbing!
Well, it is now a “floating” lead pipe, for added resonance. And it appears to be pure copper, so no red rot! After all, no zinc, no de-zincification!PlayTheTuba wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2024 10:44 am It would be interesting, assuming a mouthpiece fits well and they are no leaks, if it ends up being better than the original lead pipe!

Re: Nice plumbing!
You may want to rethink that. This is an artisanal product. https://rvb-img.reverb.com/image/upload/s--1vbwKpTA--/a_0/f_auto,t_large/v1705705434/heqzzazenvuslek6pad4.jpg It almost looks like random markings, but a sort of similar decoration is visible on the exterior in the first picture. So, the ...

Re: A humorous translation guide to tuba sales
“Has a few dents that do not effect the sound” = beat to hell. “Has the usual dings, dents, scuffs, and scratches that can be expected on a used tuba” = beat to hell. “Not cosmetically perfect but this horn is a player!” = beat to hell. So many different ways of saying “beat to hell”!  ...
