Re: Wrong notes in Community Band

Excellent question! The answer to me seems simple and obvious. Do NOT bring this up in band rehearsal. Instead, reach out to the conductor one on one. In person, by phone, e-mail, text, whatever you prefer. Simply tell him something like “I couldn’t help but notice some notes that don’t sound quite r ...

Re: Some help and advice!

As for drum corps, my experience was that they are looking for people who are willing to show up and work hard. It is more like an athletic sport. Also very expensive. Tons of fun. Probably the most influential thing of my youth. Sent from my SM-S367VL using Tapatalk Thank you! I've been saving up ...

Re: Some help and advice!

Tim Hoffman teaches tuba at the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs campus. You could try contacting him. He might be willing to take you on as a side project. Or point you to a different teacher who would be good for you.

Why did they get all that Kanstul stuff, and then do nothing with it?

Re: Tuba Christmas Chicago

I was slightly guilty of this at the beginning of the tuba Christmas i attended. However, I was the only front facing bell there and I could not hear myself at all because many others were just blasting away. so I was playing louder and louder without realizing. But not blatting. Anyway, after a ...

Re: "I'm getting older, and looking for a smaller tuba, but I still want four valves"

There Josef Lidl LBB701-4 BBb at Lee Stofer’s website and I think it would be great for someone who is looking for something lighter. It has 400mm/15.7″ bell, 18.3mm/ .720″ bore. There’s also 702 model which CC version with 4 valves and it’s awesome. Only weighs 14 lbs. Easy to carry and play even b ...

Re: Funnel vs Conical

I think the diagram of the Conn mouthpiece vs. Helleberg/Geib explains it very well. All three could be called “conical”. But I would call the Conn closer to being “funnel” shaped because of the large back bore. 50 years ago when I was a teenager I took several lessons with Philip Catelinet while he ...

Re: "I'm getting older, and looking for a smaller tuba, but I still want four valves"

Every old guy has a different answer for this problem. The “perfect” small, light, awesome sounding 4 valve tuba. Obviously made out of unobtainium. As a fellow old guy, I found my answer with the King 2341. Is it light? Not particularly, but certainly lighter than some- between 21 and 22 pou ...

Re: POLL: Beatles - "All My Loving "

To be more convincing as country, it would need to be slowed down (not a ton, but) somewhat. As it is, is sounds "sorta" like several things, yes? The fact that it “sounds like” several different things shows that the Beatles had multiple influences. But don’t forget that they started out (back in t ...

Re: 10-page early 1970's Miraphone tuba brochure

Does anyone know anything about Donald Brown, who (ref: brochure) played in the Erie Philharmonic back in the 1960's ? I'm only able to state "1960's" because google found an old concert program with him listed that dated from the '60's. I don’t have specific knowledge on that, but I do know Lowell ...

Is there room on the 2nd valve elbow? Not finding any good pics of that angle online, but if this is accurate: https://i.imgur.com/eZrvMEn.jpg Then the elbow of the second slide (represented by the red line) could fit a water key approx. where the red arrow is pointing. Or would that be too hard to ...

Sorry I missed you there Grumpikins! Also sorry you had to endure rudeness. The vibe there was so mellow, it’s hard to imagine. But there are rude people everywhere you go I guess. Even tuba players! Hope to see you face to face next year! Merry (Tuba) Christmas!

Erie TubaChristmas is in the books!

This was my second time, and it was just as much fun as last year! If any of you ever get a chance to go to this one, I highly recommend it! Here are some of the great things about it: 1. A totally indoor venue at Penn State Behrend. Nice stage and music stands provided. 2. Very well run and ...

Re: Weird water collecting

Could you get your repairman to install a water key on that slide? If you search for “Kanstul 904-3B” online, you can still see a picture of one. The first second and third valve slides all face up (a secondary 3rd valve slide and MTS face down) and the short 2nd slide is sandwiched between the muc ...

Weird water collecting

I was at one of our local TubaChristmas events today and I noticed a weird problem with my little 3/4 Kanstul, which I bought specifically for things like this. After playing for a while I heard the dreaded gurgling and the playing got wonky. I figured out water was collecting either in or around ...

Re: Thanksgiving stupid game thread...

King 2341 or Conn 5J=Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster- good, basic, priced for the Everyman. Miraphone or Meinl Weston=Gibson Les Paul -pricier, mire “professional”. Lee Stofer Custom, Willson, Yamayork=Paul Reed Smith-very expensive, only for those with deep pockets. My 2 cents for what it’s worth! ...
