Re: C or Bb ???

... I agree completely that there could be some bias. I also think that the slow downfall of King/Conn has led to an increase of demand on other mXxranufacturers. Yamaha is simply too expensive compared to other brands and isn’t winning bids like they used to. Interesting how a specific question ag...

Re: C or Bb ???

Matt, here’s another piece of admittedly anecdotal evidence. I have been in contact with two well known American retailers regarding possible purchase of a certain BBb tuba. Both have been sold out of every BBb model for months now. They both have plenty of CC models on hand. They both say they are ...

Re: C or Bb ???

If I remember correctly, you are in Denmark, correct? BBb is much more standard than CC, while in the USA CC vs BBb is more confusing. CC is favored by many professional players, particularly those in orchestras, while BBb is favored in schools and with many amateurs. These are generalizations, you...

Re: 6/4 glut

The whole 6/4 York copy-inspired-whatever perennial argument is fascinating to me. And an awful lot of endless discussion here. On other threads, the discussion can be on a completely different topic but then it wanders somehow back to this. Really amazing to me. I miss the early days of the “univer...

Re: Zen and the Art of Tuba Maintenance

I don't have any customers, so there is just one human hemorrhoid I have to deal with -- me! One thing someone like you could do to monetize your abilities is to buy beat up crap for a little bit of nothing, fix it up, then sell on eBay or Reverb. No repair customers! That would minimize the human ...

Re: I appreciate you guys.

There was some ancient "guide to" thing that characterized the personality types of different instrumentalists. The only thing I remember about it was the description of tuba players which was something like "always carries a small set of tools" and "most likely to make fri...

What is the definition of a gentleman? Someone who knows how to play a saxophone, but chooses not to.

It can’t possibly play in tune with a mismatched 4th valve button!

Re: Valve job costs?

The prices I have heard have been significantly in excess of $1000. Part of the problem is not only the cost but finding someone willing to do it. I think Oberloh still does. I’ve heard $1700 there.

Sometimes, even if vintage valves are worn, all you need is a more viscous oil to seal the gap.

Re: Lee Stofer Lidl horns

He’s got quite a range on the Lidl’s. Are these all new designs with the exception of the 3/4 which looks like the one I once bought from him years ago. Or are some of these Cerveny copies. I’m still unclear what in the heck went down there with Lidl & Cerveny. He states on the website that the...

Re: Getting back in shape........ relatively!!

Speaking strictly for myself, I took a 25 year hiatus, decided to “come back” as something to do during the pandemic, having found an excellent buy on a horn (I had sold mine a long time ago. Wish I still had it!). It took me 2 months before I got in good enough shape to make an acceptable sound. I ...

Correction to previous post: found my senior recital program. I listed myself as “(my name), tuba”. Did not use “tubist” or “tubaist”. Interesting thing I did discover: spell check recognizes “tubist” but not “tubaist”. Would love to see the program! Here ya go! Names obscured to protect the innoce...

Re: Is this published proof...

To me, having to write “tuba player” just seems clunky. I mean, you’re a college student doing your senior recital, and your program has to read “(insert name), tuba player? Many other instrumental musician gets to be an “ist”, why not us? I mean aren’t we all ”instrumentalists” , (like the old maga...

Re: Weird ask… I need a mute!

I read somewhere once it’s possible to make a serviceable one out of a KFC chicken bucket. IIRC, you glue wine bottle corks cut to shape in the appropriate places and line the interior of the bucket with 1/2 inch or so of patching cement, for that Humes-Berg “Stone-Lined” sound.

Man, the Robert King catalog used to be Da Bomb for stuff like this! How I miss it! That said, it looks like the most likely contender for the One Place That Carries All Brass Music seems to be Hickey’s Music Center. What you’re looking for is in the section of the web site called “brass duos with p...
